HELP PLEASE...MAF Question

my mass air flow sensor is out again.................what a surprise. this is the fourth time, and i am tired of spending the money to have the dealer do it. is there anywhere i can get it for cheap and is it hard to do yourself?

thanks.

it will run you about $100 and it is literally a 10 minute install job. Just undo the MAF sensor cable from the MAF sensor. then unscrew the pipe clamps that are holding the MAF tube in place and replace it with the new one. Just make sure that you have the sensor pointing in the correct direction. Just look at the direction of the old one.

Try cleaning it with brake/carb cleaner first. Has fixed the problem for me in the past.

And DONT forget

Dont forget before you unplug and AFTER you plug it back in, to remove the battery cable to make sure any weird things dont happen.

1) UNHOOK negative battery terminal
2) unplug MAF and do MAF work
3) plug MAF back in
4) HOOK negative better terminal back up.

This is your 4th one? Are you using too much oil on a K&N?

Why? Brake/Carb cleaner is about $5 a can.

if its already shorted out, then carb cleaner is not going to bring it back. that may be helpful if the maf is still operating but dirty from oil or dust debris and giving inaccurate readings.

What is the sign of a shorted out MAF? Wouldn't they both generate the same SES code?

im sure in either situation that it would throw the same code as it would be out of its tolerances. some have used carb/intake cleaner only to have it die a few days later. ive cleaned mine before because of a small amount of red residue from a k&n filter. i used electronic parts cleaner mainly because its safe for the plastic around the thin wire at the bottom of the maf.

hey, i know my MAF is dirty, how would i go about cleaning it out? do i just remove the unit like i would when replacing it (i've already replaced it once) or do i have to open the unit up? is there a write up for this anywhere?

i have not seen any write ups but its pretty simple. unplug the maf from the connector by pushing on the green clip. then there are 2 security torx bits on either side. i believe its a T20. normal torx bits wont work as they have the dimple in the middle that requires what ive always called a security bit.
then pull the actuall maf out. you will see a thin wire at the bottom and thats where you want to spray. i wouldnt coat it and be sure to have a q tip to wipe any residue left. i used electronic parts cleaner and others have that or carb/intake cleaner. reverse the install and you are done. others will warn to unplug the negative terminal but ive taken mine out quite a few times w/o taking the terminal off with no problem. good luck.
