CD player skips when cold?

Okay,

so I'm one of the "lucky" ones that has the Bose "Premium" sound. I've already gone through my share of head units (5 now I think) due to the well known left speaker cutting in and out. My latest HU seems to be alright. I've had it for half a year now and so far so good.

However, lately the CD player seems to skip a lot now, especially when it's cold (we've been suffering around zero and single digits for a while now). I can't recall it skipping this bad last winter and wondered if anyone else has had this problem.

I guess overall I am so fed up with the pile of crap sound system that they put in these cars that I'm ready to ask for my $1000 back for the "Premium" sound upgrade. No matter how good the rest of the car is, the problems I've had alone with the stereo is enough for me to never buy a Nissan again.

So any feedback on CD's skipping would be appreciated.... Thanks much!

Mine skips too when it is cold out, and the way these HU's have been, skipping is followed by cutting out left speakers....that's what happened to me. First skipping in the cold, and know i need the radio TSB done...

it having problems with below or close to zero weather is expected. everything is electronic and freezes so until it warms up you will get some skipping. no matter what hu you have it will happen...i've been in a few cars and they have all done it, even when i had my aftermarket hu in my last max, same deal...hope this helps put u at ease

You should just bite the bullet, and get a new headunit if it bothers you that much. Also some new speakers too, if one of them is cutting out. Better yet, why dont you call Nissan and ask them if you can have your $1000 back from the premium sound. I think you would have as much luck getting money for your stereo as the ones that tried to get their chipped hoods fixed. If you are serious about car audio, then you might have considered the idea of installing something aftermarket and saving yourself the $1000, just something I have learned over the years

Mine skips too. I first thought it was the burned CDs, but it does it on *legal* discs too. Then thought cold (condensation)----60+ degrees today and still skipping. Does seem to improve once the unit warms up though.

I just dunno...... POS

I got a DVD lined up but I really dig the 6-disc in-dash (plus the whole system looks stock therefore not advertising for theft.

How about you call your dealership's service center and set up an appointment or tell them your headunit # is CR070
and let them get your information, and order you a new head unit. Worse comes to worse, make an appointment and have the problem verified with a technician.
Your audio unit is under a 3yr/36K mi warranty for a reason.

New unit is about $1500. I had to script one of my customers to call 1800NISSAN1 to get a new headunit cause her unit kept skipping over and over, even after replacement. If you need to do so after several replacement, by all means call 1800NISSAN1, and make a complaint. The units that are ordered are refurb.units.*hint*

Thanks for all the replies...

I understand and am willing to tolerate some skipping as the unit has to warm up. But it's been pretty ridiculous and last night I drove 20 miles and it was still skipping too much(hence my post here, I was fed up). The thing is, I put a Pioneer unit in my gf's car and she has no problems when it's cold.

Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, and knowing what I know now I would have never purchased the car with the Bose system. At the time I was buying last years models at a discount so "beggers can't be choosers" applies. In fact, I really didn't want the $1000 audio option because, as most factory options, is a bit of a rip off. However, one would think that at least their would be some quality to the components they put in the car when they charge you that kind of money.

I have really taken a liking to the 6 disc in-dash though and the steering wheel controls along with the nice look of OEM radio make it hard to replace. Plus, I'm not sure how much longer I'll keep the car... a year? 2 maybe?

I've got just over 32k miles on my car and have had it for just over 1 and half years. Plus I believe the radio has a 3 year warranty and is not dependent on milage. In any case, it's under warranty and I'll just take it in and complain. I was looking at the wind noise TSB anyway, plus this would be a good excuse to just try and get them to do a good "once over" on the car before the bumper to bumper expires. It is just such a pain to take the car into the dealer... so many better things to do.

maximum_rpm_nyc,

Do you think calling the nissan number would be worth doing? I'm quite confident I can get a new HU out of the dealership. They've been quite fair and have never put up a fight even when they couldn't reproduce the problem.

I was wondering if maybe a letter or something would at the very least get someone to better address issues like this in the future. You would think they'd do a bit better of a job in selecting manufacters/parts to use in their vechicles. And I thought Clarion was pretty decent in car audio... are they really that bad? Or did they just use all their left over parts in designing/building this unit?

Anyways, thanks again everyone...

My customer had her audio unit replaced 4 times, and it was different issues each time or repeat of cds skipping. I replaced all speakers except Sub. The units are made by Clarion, and for some reason, 2k2 and 2k3 HU have problems.
JTMax03 visted me once and got his HU replaced no Qs asked. I don't think he has had a problem since then. The HU in my car is original 9/99 manufacture date. Common ones are Max and Murano HUs. You can always call up Nissan if the new unit your recieve does the same cut-out or skip symptom you describe.
Also since you might go to the dealership, might as well do Cam/Crank Sensor Campaign. R3022. Also the lower control arm(front) campaign if your car qualifies for it. Your service advisor might appreciate doing the warranty work.

COLD = condensation on the cd's themselves. I have that problem when really cold, even on my aftermarket stuff. When you hear it skip, take out that cd and look at it, if you see it foggy, you know its condensation, and just let it warm up. Whether or not that condensation leads to faulty equipment it left to be said. I had the same problem in my 01 with the same system only single cd.

Warm or cold CDs, mine skips the same--I've pulled em out myself---what else you got??

As Nizan mentioned per his experience, the skipping was followed by the left channel dropping off. Guess what happened to me last night.....

Replacement unit is on it's way.......and so the fun begins boys and girls.

I've got a line on an in-dash DVD player. I think that is the real solution. My buddy is on replacement stock unit #4 so far in his 2002....
