HIT THE HIGHWAY TODAY 6PM TO TAKE MY MAX OUT FOR A RIDE (PARKED FOR THE WINTER). BEHIND AN SUV AND BEHIND ME A NEW BODY STYLE AVALON 2K OR 2K1,TRAFFIC WAS KIND OF HEAVY BUT FLOWING.ALL OF A SUDDEN THE AVALON SHOOTS INTO THE FAR LEFT LANE AND STARTED WORKING TROUGH TRAFFIC,THAT WAS ENOUGH TO GET ME STARTED,WHEN I FINALLY CLEARED THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME I SAW HIM WAY AHEAD OF ME,EVEN THOUGH HE GOT THE JUMP ON ME I CAUGHT UP TO HIM,HE GOT ANOTHER BREAK IN TRAFFIC AND HE WAS OFF AGAIN. HE PISSED ME OFF BY PUTTING ON HIS HAZARD LIGHTS,THINKING I WAS A PUSH OVER.HE JUST MADE A BIG MISTAKE,WHEN I WORKED TROUGH TRAFFIC AND CAME UP BEHIND HIM AND STARTED FLASHING HIM 100 MPH TO SHOW ME WHAT HE HAD.UNDER HIS BUMPER AND HE'S FLORING IT I JUST WENT AROUND HIM SHOWING HIM HE HAS NOTHING,NOW I'M IN FRONT AND TRAFFIC IS STILL THERE WORKING TROUGH TRAFFIC AND HE'S BEHIND.THIS GUY HITS THE SHOLDER TO CATCH UP,BUT I'M STILL THERE I REFUSE TO TAKE THE SHOLDER TO WIN A RACE AND HE STILL CAN'T SHAKE ME, UNDER HIS BUMPER WAITING FOR AN OPENING TO END THIS RACE AND JUST BLOW HIM AWAY,HE TAKES THE SHOLDER AGAIN KICKING UP DUST AND SAND,AT THAT POINT I DECIDED TO EXIT THE HIGHWAY I WAS ALREADY 6 EXITS AWAY FROM WHERE I WAS GOING.I GUESS HE FELT THE POWER OF THE MAXIMA AND KNEW AT THAT POINT I WASN'T A PUSH OVER,AND HE DIDN'T WANT TO LOOK BAD TO HIS PASSENGERS.NOW YOU TELL ME WICH ONE OF US WON THIS RACE.THE AVALON HAS SOME POWER BUT NOTHING FOR THE MAXIMA.IF YOUR GOING TO RACE STAY OFF THE SHOLDER AND TAKE YOUR *** WIPPING LIKE A MAN,ALL THOSE PEBBLES AND ROCKS ALMOST PUT CHIPS ALL OVER MY BODY KIT.I HOPE TO SEE THIS GUY AGAIN IN BETTER TRAFFIC CONDITIONS FOR A BIG K.O FROM A STAND STILL.MAX RULES BABY.

Let's review... a ~3200 lb, 222hp maxima vs. a ~3430 lb 210 hp toyota...

Heh.. Judging from the specs, it's an embarrasing kill, even with a stock auto maxima...

Must've been painful for the guy... you know, getting beaten by a "cheaper" car... :-)

I once had someone in a PT cruiser try to race me... seriously... it was on that uphill stretch of rt24 in NJ... without traffic.... did i mention it was UPHILL!!!!!!
Anyone want to take a guess as to who made it to the top first???

I attribute this kind of phenomenon to a total and complete lack of education, or just general stupidity... In fact, I bet these same people would see nothing wrong with pulling up to a porsche 911 turbo, and revving their engine... (assuming they could tell the difference btw. a porsche and a geo metro)

Geesh... There are only a handful of cars that could give the max a good tight race... Admittedly, tho, the Avalon comes a tad bit closer than a Chevy PT....

YOU REALLY DON'T NEED ALOT OF HP TO RACE TROUGH TRAFFIC,AND BELIEVE ME RACING IN TIGHT TRAFFIC IS NOT I LOVE TO DO MY MAX HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN LIKE THIS IN A WHILE LAST RACE WAS WITH A CIVIC THAT HAD A GSR MOTOR INTAKE,EXHAUST,AND FULL AJUSTABLE SUSPENSION.EVEN THOUGH THAT MOTOR ONLY HAS 170 HP + INTAKE + EXHAUST= POSSIBLE 190+ HP .EVEN AT LAUNCH BUT TOP END 3RD GEAR UP IT WAS A KILL,BUT DON'T SLEEP ON THOSE CIVICS.TRAFFIC WISE THEY MIGHT MURDER YOU IF YOU SLEEP ON THEM.

Has anyone noticed that the cars that are run against in 'kill stories' have gone from 'I killed a sports car' to 'I killed a minivan with seven people in it'. Of course you're going to beat (hopefully) a car that was expressly designed by Toyota for 60+ year olds that want a smooth, quiet ride. Let's stop writing about 'How I killed a car that my grandmother drives'. Now that I think about it, my grandmother drives a Porsche Boxster. I would be impressed if I beat her.

 

What is the deal with Avalon's? I had a loaded up Avalon as a rental last week in New England (leather, roof, the works) and I was so bored with the car, not to mention completely confused by the instrument panel. It's as though a late 80's Regal collided with the LS 400. I mean, the info display thingy was totally useless to me, as the reach was too far to adjust safely. And the dash stretched from door to door like the great wall of China. It was floaty, although it would get up and go, which I appreciated. If I were interested in this car, I would definitely not have the Maxima on my list. They are two completely different cars built for two different consumers.

The scary part is the Avalon is what I keep reading is Nissan's target for moving Maxima upmarket. If that is true, then I'm driving the last Maxima I'll ever own. No thanks.

 

my parents have a 2001 avalon and i drive it sometimes when i'm having work done on my car...it is pretty nice in my opinion...not as nice or nearly as nice as my max though...but they also have an expedition and i choose the avalon all the time...it is not as fast as my car and it handles like $hit, but it takes bumps 1,000,000,000,000..........times better than the max...theirs has auto climate control and side airbags and the upgraded stereo...it does not sound as nice as the stock bose but it sounds pretty good for a stock stereo...

remember srmtn, rental cars are usually different than the actual car they sell at the dealership...i haven't rented a max yet, but i'm sure the ones they rent out are the base model gxe w/ the single din stereo...usually car rental places have the crappiest and lowest possible model

 

The Avalon I drove was a top-of-the-line Avalon with about 1800 miles on it. It was leather, sunroof, cd, side airbags...the works. It simply would not be my choice for a car...and my comments were meant to be more of a distress signal that this is where I read/hear that Nissan wants to take the Maxima. This would be a very different Maxima, and not one I would choose to own. That's all. The Avalon is a fine car, drives much like Buick would like their cars to drive, and I don't mean that sarcastically. It's just a totally different market that the Avalon is designed for. And any Maxima that is to compete with it, well, would not be a Maxima in my opinion.

Bah, Nissan would be killing me...anyone who has driven this car LOVES it. anyhow, just a roadkill story to amuse, i was stopped at a light the other night next to a riced out integra gsr, he revs, so i gotta represent right? light turns green and i tear him up over the freeway overpass. Lesson?: V-Tech is useless going uphill =).

 

man..if u want to race someone and risk getting pulled over by cops...might as well race something worth of that risk...an avalon..nice car, but, eh...not fun when it comes to racing..
