Yup, it sucks because you need 8 different cd's for the entire country. I guess when you pay $2000 as an option for Navi, they dont feel a need to give you ALL the cd's.....

Yeah, especially when you go to the Zenrin site and find that the DVD version which covers the entire country goes for $185. And this even covers small parts of Canada. Each of the CDs runs $120 each. OK, you can buy multiple zones and get all 9 (yes it's even 9 CDs, not 8) for a "discounted" price of $738.83 (and no Canada).

Other disadvantage is that you can't do point to point routing if you start in one CD area and finish in the other. Kind of defeats the purpose of the system. You still have to get out a big map and plug in intermediate waypoints in overlap areas if there are some. This is not always the case. Run from Hartford, CT to Binghampton, NY and the regions split a few miles South of there with no overlap.

Good news is you can find CDs available on e-bay. Sometimes it's an older version that the owner is selling to recoup some of the ransom for buying his new version. I've picked up a couple "old" ones which do fine for areas I travel to infrequently. However, beware of unauthorized "burned" copies although I guess it's up to you whether you want to face the ethical and legal copyright issues. To find just go to e-bay motors and search on Nissan Navigation from the "Parts and Accessories" section. If you search from the home page you'll also pick up listing for Nissans with the navigation system. So far, not too many to make the search results too long but it will eventually. You can also drill down to: eBayMotors > All Categories > Parts & Accessories > Car & Truck > Audio, Video, & Electronics > GPS, Navigation

I've even sent an e-mail to Zenrin suggesting they put out a group buy to Maxima.org at discount prices but only got a generic thank-you response for my suggesstion.

I've also even thought about buying all 9 regions at the discount and then trying to sell regions I don't need off on e-bay for at least the $82 average with discount, plus selling the old versions of the regions I have. Not sure if I wan't to make that $785 investment though. I'm not sure if I'd even pay that discounted $82 to someone else for a new authorized copy of a disk.

I was less than impressed with their ability to respond. Customer service via this crew is "weak" to say the least (and I was trying to buy).

Re: Navigation. There's legitimate criticism in this thread (CD vs DVD, forced to use/buy multiple CDs, etc.) but...I like what I have and the functionality in general. Works great when traveling on business and I need to get to a specific client site in large metropolitan areas I'm not that familiar with (e.g. greater Chicago). Beats Mapquest research, hard-copy maps, etc. Would I have bought the option new as priced? No way, but it was on my pre-owned Max when I purchased it and I'm glad to have it.

Navigation on all G35's are optional equipment, but they're all DVD types. It's expensive, but worth having.

There's no voice recognition, but there's a voice that prompts you for every turn, etc. It's really great, although she becomes a nag at times, like having your wife in the car.

Yeah, my girlfriend and I refer to her as Miss Direction.

Work's OK but my girlfriend tends to try and argue with it over what she believes are better direction. Got even worse one time with my mother also in the car. They all had different ideas about how to get from Point A to Point B.

I just shut up and drove.
