service engine soon light on?

hi everyone,

just as the subject says my girlfriends service engine soon light is on. what can be the cause of the light.? no problems on performance at all and drives like normal. just got done changing oil and light is still on? is that a sensor for when you need to change oil? the car has 57k and is a 2002 SE. i even checked the gas cap to make sure it was on correctly. manual stated to check that and it ssould go away after several trips but has not.. the light is steady not blinking. so it may be emmsions related. right or wrong.

any help would be great.

thanks in advance

there are three things that I would do

1.have autozone pull the code for free and the code will tell you what caused the SES (or have dealer do it)
2.reset the ECU (pull off the neg. cable of your battery) and see if the SES light comes back.
3.do nothing.

if it is blinking - it means there's a misfire in one or more cylinder.

If you didn't tighten the gas cap 3 clicks, it can set it off. Like stated above, have AutoZone pull the code for free. Then bring the code back to the .org and we'll tell you what to check/fix.

If you need instructions to reset the ECU for her 2002, check out my web-site.

hey guys thanks for the responses. here in cali autozone or any auto parts stores are no longer autorized to pull codes.auto repair shops filed a complaint a while back regarding the issue so that option is not available. i will try the reseting the ecu to see what happens.. we did make sure we clicked the gas cap three or more times.

thanks agian

studman what is your wbsite..?

Had the same problem with my 02 Maxima GLE. And there was a delay with the ignition and throttle response was funny. Went to AutoZone and they pulled up a code, P0345, which is a problem with the camshaft sensors. I went to the dealer and they checked it out and when I came to pcik it up they said it was under warranty and that there was a recall on some of the 02 vehicles but not all the owners were notified. WTF is that all about??? Isnt that big time violation? When a company knows there is a recall affecting certain vehicles but fails to inform all affected owners??
But they fixed it and now it is all good but we had some other issues with the service manager there but thats another story for another forum.
