6 speed diff. conversion done

http://www.poweredbynissan.com/images/2K2Max/RS6F51H/

I had to replace my broken clutch so I converted the spare tranny I had but installing the helical differential from my existing tranny. It was a direct drop in after I managed to remove all the gear assemblies.

Have you thought about using the final drive from a 2k4 6 speed. It was changed to account for the larger wheels on the 2k4, but in a 5th gen it would shorten the ratios.

Was the spare tranny an HLSD or open differential tranny? I've heard that the casings for each are two different sizes.

Well, my dealer tried to tell me I had the open model because I have the same casing as the open tranny. Of course the Metal plate under the hood says I have the HLSD. I'd say they probably have the same housing. I'm sure SR20 can clear this up.

See if your car came with the drilled metal pedals. Non HLSD cars have regular rubber pedals.

The casings are the same size. Basically all he did was remove the open and drop his HSLD in and keep the gears from the replacement open tranny. I was there the night of the swap and snapped the few pics available.

Yes there is no difference in size between the bearing races of the HLSD vs. the open differential. Everyone is geting it confused with the older transmissions open differential vs. the VLSD which does have a much larger bearing race.

So then why is it so fu(k!ng hard to get a dealer to install the Nissan HLSD? It sounds like a relatively simple job.

Because half of them are ignorant of the facts and the other half are too lazy to do any abnormal work. Nissan techs are trained by their own salary to do as little as possible and only accept the easy jobs that pay well. A tech would probably lose his **** on this job salary wise if it was the first one he did.

Everyone just needs to send me this kind of work. I won't b!tch about voiding your warranty.

And it does none of you any good to run to your dealer and tell them "well some guy on the internet did it". They'll just trash talk you behind your back, I know because my co-workers do this same crap to our customers. This is one thing where I defend the customers on, the guy on the internet is not always wrong.

Fark no!! If anything my first gear needs to be taller. If the final drive were any shorter I would have to use second gear as my first gear. And I can already roast second gear from a standstill. I can almost launch the car from second gear now.

OK OK. Sorry, but I am a bit confused. and would like clarification.....

So anyone with a 6MT 2k2 or 2k3 can pop open their tranny... put in the helical differential with all the existing parts, and poof, you now have HLSD?

I fail to see what is confusing. I have explained this dozens of times and even posted some pictures of that very task.

I think i can do the job in about 2+ hours once the tranny is on my bench.

It requires basically dissasembling the whole thing and it's not fun. I don't recommend it for anyone that isn't very mechanically inclined. This tranny is much more difficult to take apart than the older 5 speed trannys.

2+ hrs...so adding the time to pull the tranny, what's the total time for a job like this?

Matt had HLSD stock but he got a deal on an open differential tranny that only had 1500 miles on it that was replaced by the dealer for bearing whine. His gears were screwed in his current tranny and wouldn't shift into 6th and when it did it was a PITA to get out of 6th. He basically just swapped his HLSD into the open diff. and used the casing and gears from the open diff.

I will check my prices from the dealer but I'll tell you now the thing could still cost about $800+ for the parts alone. You can all contact DAVE B to see what he says. Also by this weekend I will have some other information that will be useful if it works.

Labor to remove and install the tranny will be about three hours because mine was the first 6 speed I have done, so im not fast on them yet. These are also more of PITA to remove from the car than the 5 speed was from the 4th gen.

I can get the HLSD unit for $449. My catalog says the diff bearings and ring gear are the same. Looks promising!

So, 3 hours to R & R the trans and another 2-3 to R & R the diff. So tha't 5-6 hours to do complete job. Is that a correct figure for the job SR20DEN? What are your labor rates?

Dave B...... Thanks for the pricing info bro!!!! I'll be in touch!!!

We'll have to get one of the mods to make this a sticky once we get pricing worked out!!! We can't be the only ones wanting/curious to do this.....can we?

That is far better than I had hoped for.

I will also need to check on the availibility of the shims and if I am going to be doing more of these I will need to stock a variety of them.

I wish it was me. SR20DEN, I'm about 7 hours away from you. I'd love to give you the business too, but was wondering if once you figure it all out, if you could post up a parts list, etc that was needed. I know of several people in my area that want this done, but I don't think each and every one of them want to drive to Charlotte to do this. I've got a connection here in Orlando that can do the work for sure, but they'd just need more information to know what else is involved in doing the job - any pointers, tips, tricks, etc.

BTW... awesome job taking this upon yourself. My PR motor mounts finally let me put the power to wheels, so now I need the LSD to help apply it evenly. Keep me posted.

I got the same price of $449 for the differential and about $3 and change for each thrust shim which is application specific. Also it makes no difference to me if you get that through me or Dave because that is already at wholesale cost.

The guys at the shop where I work all think I am selling the job too cheap @ $350 to cover my labor and shop fees but that is what I am going with on this one. I am certain the dealership or my work would charge much more than that to do this job.

That is a good price. I'd charge $350 just to pull the tranny out and putting it back in, then another fee for opening the tranny and doing the rest.
That's a good price for anyone interested in this.
Good job SR.

I think that's an outstanding price SR20DEN!!! I should be ready to go for the install in a month. I need to do a little saving and coordinating my schedule in order to do this in a weekends time. Is this something you can do on a Saturday? I will probably drive down on a Friday have you do the swap on Saturday and hopefully return home on a Sunday. Does this sound agreeable to you?

Yes that's the best way to do this. However if you order the HLSD through me I need payment for it up front.

I was quoted $700 for the Quaife install, but it included a "FREE" clutch/flywheel install since he's already got it all apart.

Anyways, $350 is a steal~!

Wish I was closer to NC.
