Well after my tax returns and some extra cash that I have saved I am faced with a difficult decision. Either make my max super fast or buy CBR F4 that my buddy is selling. Its a 99 with only 6k miles on it for $4,000 similar to the one in the picture, what do you guys think?

At one time I wanted a bike, but I think having a TC'ed 3.5 would be a blast also. Although it would cost quite a bit more than 4k it would be plenty fun

Only good thing about the bike is that no matter what u put in the max I will still smoke you
On the other hand having a grocery getter that will smoke most v-8's on the road would be awesome too.

Dying on a bike would not be too cool . Helmets do not work too well when you smack a truck at 60mph.

For the money, you could build up a project car (turbo 240?)

If I was going to get a Honda CBR I'd have to get a 900 RR, little bit more expensive than the 600, but a lot faster.

Take alook on ebay or cycle trader.com for used 600F4's. There are a million of them. $4K isnt' bad but you can probably find one for $500-$1K less without a lot of work.
You also may want to check your insurance rates prior to purchase. Nowadays sportbike insurance is really high.
Yes, I've got a few bikes and ride the **** out of all of them. They are waaaaay more fun than car most people can afford.
Do a few track days or take a riding school as well as the MSF course and you'll have a ball. Probably be selling the Max to get a pickup so you can go racing!!

Have you checked on the cost of insurance on the CBR? I was thinking of trading my v star for a R6 and the insurance was going to be $1400 a year and I'm 34. My v star is only about $600 a year so I had to say no.

This is a very good point to look at. You might be able to afford the bike, but not the insurance.

A couple other things to think about when you get a bike:

1) TAKE THE SAFETY COURSE! Not only will you see things from a new angle, 99% of insurance companies give you a discount if you have a certificate.

2) Motorcycle gear is EXPENSIVE. Helmet, armored jacket, pants and gloves...youll be dropping a good amount of money. Jeans and a t-shirt = a disaster waiting to happen. Think not? I was a shorts/t-shirt helmet guy and "knew" it would not happen to me. Then my buddys wife wiped out due to negligence of a NEW driver. If I recall correctly, 21 surgies later (or some other godly number like it...its for sure more than 15) her leg still looks like a sausage out of a grinder and she lost 2" of her leg and walks with a cane as well. IF she had just had riding pants on...she would have only broke her leg..painful yes....recoverable. I now ride with armored pants/jackets/helmet and gloves. To bad it took the misery and misfortune of someone close to me to get me to wake up. If you get the mesh stuff....its REALLY not that bad during the summer. 90+ and High humidity is confortable, and I can sweat in a blizzard. Sitting in stop in go traffic or a traffic jam...yeah youll hate it a bit.

3) on ANY given day Ill take my bike against ANY Maxima (On a nice road track or god forbid a drag strip), and take the pink slip home. 0-60 in about 2.6 seconds AND I get 40 MPG. Beat that!

4) Bikes are not as "cheap" to be maintained as many think. You go through tires faster (I am at a set every 7 months or so) and they are more expensive a pop. For me an average tire change costs me about 300 dollars and I do most of the work myself. "Some" require different oils (to be debated to death) while other do not. So require expensive valve train adjustments (not the CBR or even Honda really for that matter, but Aprilla, Ducati, BMW...) so make sure to read up on what $$$ is involved to keep it running tip-top.

5) And finally, respect the bike, its power and how "insignificant" you are to other motorists, and you "should" be fine. Neglect this...your toast. Riding once in a while on a buddies bike now and again does not give you the needed skill set to operate fully. Learn, read and protect yourself....Dont become a statistic.

And lastly...bikes are great. Fun and blast to drive. Find the local road couse near you....take a course and youll be "draggin knees" and saying "Drag what? Why?"
