Berk Intake installed - some questions!
Berk Intake installed - some questions!
Whew...it's bad enough that I'm not too mechanically inclined, but when I don't follow instructions, simple things turn into large projects. Anyway, I installed the Berk intake today, not a moment too soon as darkness fell on me right as I completed the install. Next time, when the instructions say use the 3" - 3" coupler, I won't use the only one that's NOT a 3" - 3" coupler. Yep, I'm an idiot...anyway, I do have a few questions for those that can answer them:
1. It whistles! Every time I get on the gas for the first quick 1000-1500 rpm's it whistles....WOO WOO!
Is this normal?
2. The vacuum tubes are really stretched, particularly the tiny one on the bottom - will this develop into a problem, and if so how can I fix it?

3. Where do I hookup the bracket in this pic to, do I need to, and is it even smart to do so since it would make the whole intake assembly all rigid?

4. Does this look normal??

Thanks in advance for any comments and information, much appreciated -- I ran it around the block a few times and it sounds real nice, I can see what people are saying about flooring it all the time to hear the intake, it sounds real good....

i just installed mine last week my car whistles also at low rpm so i guess its normal i thought maybe it was because i got the cheeper kn. filter but i guess not looking at your intake for the bracket i had to bend mine a little so it would fit i is supposed to go on the maf bracket were the four bolts are the upper one closest to the strut tower but it takes some bending. The sound at wide open throttle makes up for the slight whistling IMO. good luck with the bracket.
the apexi filter is heavier than the K&N filter so I figured i would put the bracket on. here is a pic of it. plus it will prevent the filter from rattling against the strut tower. i had to play with the bracket a bit and bend it just right so it wouldnt be a problem. i just bent the top piece up a bit more so it was more straight. (the part the connects to the strut tower). i also did not tighten that bolt all the way so it allows the intake to move freely up and down and a little sideways. i did tighten it down all they way on the maf tube.

as far as the tubes go, just had to play around with them a bit as well and here is what mine looked like.

here is an over all pic and mine doesnt really whistle at all. every now and then i will hear it whistle but it lasts for about a sec or so and only if i get on it. hope this helps out some.

Very cool, thanks for the replies, I'll work on it a little more this weekend -- if I do need to get a replacement vacuum hose or two from Autozone (a longer one), does anyone have a clue what size(s) i'd be looking for?
Thanks again

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to jump out of a window if people keep saying that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The basic design is the same but the dimensions that I use are different. When I designed it I tuned the length of the intake pipe to maximize the pumping efficiency of the intake. The Frankencar is about an inch longer so I think he just copied the Place Racing intake tube.
Secondly, all of his parts are made out of mild steel and are then painted over. All of my parts are polished 6061 aluminum and 304 stainless steel.
Thirdly, Steve makes these in his garage. I am not the best welder out there, that's why I hire people that do this for a living to do the fabrication. One of the guys I use welds Inconnel fuel lines for Delta rockets. As far as the common "exotic" metals, this is one of the hardest out there to weld. So TIG welding aluminum is no sweat.
Fourthly, Frankencar sent out a whole batch of intakes that were just epoxied together and not even welded. Subsiquently they all broke. He did send them replacements. You won't see me put my name on somthing like that, let alone take your hard earned money for it.
Again, I've always said it before, the more people you have competing, the better the products get and it also lowers the prices of those products. The people that win are the consumer. Imagine if I were the only person in the world that sold cars. It wouldn't matter what I sold at what price because it beats walking right? But with competition in the market place, each person wants to make their product better so that people will pick Brand A over Brand B.
I could go on forever but I'll stop here. Steve, not trying to start a flame war again, but people keep comparing me to you and I want to clear things up.

install the Berk, and that was without instructions , pretty easy job.
Just keep your 10 mm socket handy!

Now, even if my MAF blows due to the intake, I can just get an 01 MAF from DAVEB ($90 shipped) and rig it so it shuts off the SES light and I can drive the car again.
