How do you remove the brackets off the radio

I have a 2000 non-bose radio. How the hell do you guys remove those 6 black screws on each side that holds the entire radio/heat/AC controls to those rails?

The bottom 2 that goes into the black plastic is easy but I can't even budge tho others??? Need suggestions.

thanks

use a drill with the phillips bit.

Some are harder to undo then others

Put the radio on a countertop or bench. Use a phillips bit that is in good condition mounted in a drill. Line it up and press hard, then give the drill full power---making sure it's set to loosen. Those babies are really in there. All of mine made a CRACK sound as they broke loose.

Don't mess around with a regular screwdriver.

Someone posted this elsewhere, but I forget who it was. My thanks to them for saving me major grief.

here's a follow up question

mine are like a biotch and a half to get out

i tried a few drills also, of various voltage, and none of them took it out
i have 4 scrwes left, i was told to use a drill bit to try to disintegrate them....but THAT didn't even work

now i got a few small screws that have a drill bit indentation in them going halfway thru.....i just guess to keep drilling? slightly bigger bit?

suggestions?

LOL, funny because i did 2 radios in 97 maximas and one i got worked lik a charm the other was a pain. The easiest way is to actually turn it to tighten the screws, this in return will loosen it to take it off. Trust me it sounds retarded, but take a good phillips and tighten the screw just a little bit, once it cracks then loosen them badboys off

keep drilling. it turned into a project to get my last 2 screws out. use a small fine bit to make a hole, then a bigger one to finish the job. ti takes a long *** time but it will work, trust me.

I had the same problem, and I used an impact driver. You get one for about $10 at an auto supply store. It's basically a spring-loaded screwdriver that you hit with a hammer. The spring forces all the energy from the hammer blow right into the screwdriver tip. The stuck screws popped right out and no, it didn't dmage the stock radio if you're wondering. I had to put the stock back in for a while when I was switching aftermarket units and it worked just fine.

man you LOVE drilling dont u, even on the thread in audio/electronics, hahah...

i was just afraid of two things..
1. the metal shavings possibly damaging the h.u.
2. inadvertently going thru the entire screw and into the unit, b/c the screw is so small

Well, I damaged the head on 3 screws and gave up. I didn't get any of them out. I used good bits but it seems like the bits disintegrated the mating half of the philips screw. WTF was nissan thinking when they put those in?????

I'm so frustrated right now.

yeah i lost a bit or 2 doing it. dont give up. its a pita for sure. and to kash.. i hate drilling but this damn maxima seems to force me to drill. i would have saved alot of time by just drilling in the 1st place. thats why i say drill, haha. when i tried to drill through i was also afraid of the shaving and damaging the h/u but i put the stock one back on after and it was just fine. if someone wanted to ever steal a stock h/u theyd have fun trying to get it out of the bracket.

You need a high power driver. I tried using the ones i had at home and actually broke two bits. I took it to my friends shop and used a stronger driver. Just press down HARD. We managed to get all of them out. The screws were useless afterwards though.

I just went through this a few weeks back. We ended up drilling them out. I think we lost 2 or 3 bits. I would imagine something with a lot of juice would help but if you don't get them early on it almost a lost cause because the screws are so soft and cheap. There's someone on here that is a senior installer at Best Buy who didn't have any problems.
