Anybody used a K&N drop in panel filter?

Its 50 bucks.....since most guys who put on CAI or cone filter intakes, don't really get there performance per dollar anyway, why not just opt for the panel filter and save money. I also heard GREEN HP perfomance panel filter also are K&N equivelent. Those filters are use on Ralley cars annd swear to be better than the K&N filters....

Or do i save and get the Catman intake, which alot of people seem to really like on there Maximas? Your advice is very much needed as i will be doing a full tune up on my Max this weekend?(Synthetic oil change, new plugs, filter , etc)

I used the K&N drop in filter when I first got my car. The reason I got it is because it would save me money in the long run having to replace air filters. This past weekend I installed an Injen intake and I can notice the difference from the stock airbox.

Intakes generally give 5th gen Maxima's between 5-10hp depending on if you have the midpipe or not. Panel filters will not give you any increases. You can get an intake through Berk for a little more than $50 and you won't be throwing your money away.

I have one

It doesn't give any extra HP. I already had it so I used it. The only benefit is that it is good forever, with cleaning. I didn't want to get an Injen or CAI or POP and have that stupid growl intake sound. Everything on my car is quiet, no aftermarket exhaust either. That's my reason for having one.

Or you can get the K&N panel and do the GAB mod to gain some extra breathing. I'm sure it doesn't give you the gains of an aftermarket intake, but the price is right.

Cool guys i thank you for your advice!

I assumed the panel filter may give you some performance , but not as much as a CAI. In mycase i am looking for some performance, how does Catman intakes fair?

GAB does give you some minor gains, and IIRC it was dyno proven as well.

which intake gives best performance will be argued till the end of time. high end blah blah..low end blah blah...
here is my opinion -
im 99.9% sure that the diffirence between all the intakes is maybe 1-2 hp max. meaning - a $250 injen CAI only gives 1-2 hp more then my $30 GAB/KN combo. now is 1-2hp really that much when you think about the other stuff you can do?
you are paying $220 so you can say you have CAI and because it looks better.
im not knocking the guys with intakes!! im simply saying i dont really car if my engine bay "looks" pretty.
i would rather spend my money on mods that REALLY increase performance like the y-pipe, catback, and UDP i ordered.

its where you cut the top part of your stock air box. there is a write-up with pictures around here somewhere.
see that slit on the top of the box?

after this picture, i also removed the plastic "scoop" that goes to the airbox and the plastic thing under the battery that is to "reduce intake noise" for old people

Good luck with the sparkplug change, you have to remove the air intake manifold to get to the rear plugs. I think its probably a good idea to remove most of the air intake itself to get the manifold off and provide more room. Take some pics if you get a chance so they can be added to the write up.

ok rafe,
here is your GAB write-up
i took some better pics for you.

here is where the scoop used to be. the white plastic "resonator" was under the battery and i removed that

here is where that scoop hooks to the air box. notice that sensor in from the right side? that is located on the scoop. i just removed it, drilled a new hole, and stuck it in where you see it.

and this is the slit i was telling you about. i just cut it with a dremil.

so now i get air through the slit AND where the scoop used to hook to the box. so im getting just as much air and a nice deep sound as with an expensive cone filter intake would. and i have had NO problems with the MAF or anything.
you owe me $20 for that its still cheaper then an intake

Why remove the orginal intake snorkel? It's a great source for fresh air compared to just sucking hot air from the engine bay. I know the cut out portion of the airbox draws in hot air, but why take away a good source of cool air when the car is moving. I have what use 4th geners call the hacked air box which is basically the GAB. I'm also running a K&N filter panel, midpipe, and the stock intake snorkel. This setup has been good for fairly consistent 98mph traps.

you arent getting cold air there. the scoop is above the grill opening. it is right where the hood closes.
i figure warm air is better then no air

Move the battery to the trunk and build/paint your own fiberglass snorkel from the front grill to the intake area. I did that on my Contour SVT, and the layout would be similar here as well...

if you look at the molding around the hood where it closes around the scoop you can see that some of it is cut away so there's enough room to allow fresh air to come in from around the grill area. it looks like it's designed to let in air from the front of the car. maybe removing it altogether can create some benefits but i'm thinking that modding air box right where the filter is and leaving the scoop might be a good combo.
