I've been a lurker in the 4th generation forum, and now Im very close to purchasing a 5th generation. I read all the FAQ's and How To's, but i still have a couple of questions

1. What are the major differences between the years? Except the Hids, the tails and the gear selector?
2. Im going to check out a 2001 maxima se with 14k miles. How many are out there with 5 spoke rims? Is it more likely to have an automatic or a manual climate control, if it has cloth seats? The guy wants 12k for it, good deal considering that its 14k on kbb?
3. Can I hook up an mp3 player to the stock BOSE stereo, without having to use an FM transmitter or a tape?
4. Is it a must to put sealer on front/rear clears?
5. Whats the usual MPG on 2001, if everything is alright?
6. Do all 2k1 come with steering wheel controls?

2k-2k1: vq30de-k (variable intake manifold)
2k2-2k3: vq35de
btw, only the 2k2-2k3 has HIDs

2. um, too hard to predict how many are made with 5 spoke rims. The size is more important than how many spokes. My old 2k1 se came with 5 spoke 16" rims (same as the gle). Clothes seats more likely to have manual climate control

3. i have no idea for audio. Anything is possible of course

4. its not a must, but a good precaution to avoid condensation later on

5. mpg is too much of a variable, but I get 24-25 mpg/highway and 20-22 mpg/local

6. only gle/se's come with steering wheel controls (IIRC)

 

OT but...

Larrio your car looks great! I love AE's and that color you have is by far my favorite of any maxima color

12k for 14kmiles!!!!! thats a steal no matter wut 5th gen it is...man thats less miles then my car and i bought my brand new less then a year ago

 

Well I went to see it today, at least from the outside.
It has 22k miles. The seats are very slightly worn out. Exterior condition is great. However there are two things that I found odd, which could be clues of rolled back odometer.
1. There is wear on the steering wheel.
2. The front tires are TOYO. The back ones are Good Years. Which tires are standard on 2k1 SE with 5 spoke rims?

I also noticed that the headlights had a certain black hue to them. What could it be? I think its AE lights, but Im not sure. Any pics of AE? Are there angel eyes for 2k1 also?

to answer 2 of my own questions - it does have manual climate control and steering wheel controls.
Are there any other differences btwn GXE and SE other than the white gauges, body colored door handles, stock spoiler and black taillights?

UPDATE

I ran carfax on it - and it came up bust.
The car was in an accident. It hit the curb. Causing the title to become salvaged. How hard must the hit have been?
Then it was restored and carfax also marks that there may have been a problem with the odometer.
Doesnt look like such a good deal anymore, am I right?

My search continues...

I found another 2k1 se for take over lease. $329 a month for 12 months and then $12k option to buy. The car has leather and BOSE. Is this a good deal?

Im so frustrated - I already had plans on modding the car - so now I must get a Maxima!!!

 

Yeah walk away from that other deal-smart catch on your part. Rather than pay $329 for 12months=$4K+/- just buy a 2k2 with the bigger engine and other standard amenities. You should be able to find a base one for $16k or so. That will give you the 17"wheels, HIDs, etc... A 2k1 for $16K is a little high IMO unless is is LOADED,low miles and mint.

 

I live in Brooklyn, so Im trying to avoid getting a 2k2 bcs of the hids. Besides, 17k is a little out of my range. I know that it will be 17k in the end (with this leased car), that is if i decide to buy it out. My plans were to get it, drive it for a year, and if I like it that much then buy it out, if not then get something else, or a newer Maxima.

My dad's friend has a lease 2k1 gle, which he's about to trade it back in, so im going to ask him what his buy-out is.
