That I know, but how would I prove to them that it didn't? It's gonna be their word against mine we all know that.

ask an outside mechanic...lowering your car can be very hard on the suspension

Let me jump on in here with my symptoms.

I have had a "squeek squeek" metal on metal type sound coming from my left front wheel for a while. The tire shop said it was deposits on my rotors - but I'm not so sure.

Lately, I've gotten what can best be described as a thumping sound that increases with speed and is coming from the driveline. The best way to describe it is that it is like going over the reflectors in the middle of the road really really fast. I can best make it happen by cruising along and giving it just a little gas. I don't get it under harder acceleration - just when cruising or with slight accel.

Could this be the bearing?

I think I am getting the woo woo on my wife's 96, but it has over 200k miles.

I am dropped on H-Tech's, have a FSTB and Stage I LCA bar and they replaced my bearing and hub under the 60k mile powertrain warranty. The service tech was sure it was NOT covered but I told about all the people on Maxima.org getting them replaced under warrranty. He made the phone call, got approval and did the work in a few hours. Check yours by simply jacking up the wheel and see if there is any play when pulling with your hands at top and bottom of the wheel.

Im am so glad I found this thread...my 2k2 has 61,000 miles on it right now and I have developed what I believe to be the wheel bearing issue. Long story short called the dealership and I am over the 60k warranty, but they told me it would be $420 plus tax, it's absolutely ridiculous. The bearing is $68 dollars online from what I've found and they want to charge over 400, any mechanics out there no how long it should take to do, I know hourly rates at the stealerships are like $65. Can't possibly take 5hrs can it?

i have the same prob as u man. i have the "woo woo" whistling sound on light acceleration and i feel like me left front tire is lose when going over sudden bumps. took it to the dealer and they told me they couldnt hear it. they to me to hold on till it got a little worser then take it to them but i have 53k miles on it and it i want it to get fixed before the 6/60,000 PT warranty gives out. Any ideas on what i can do so that they can fix it? any thing i can do to produce the noises so theres no doubt that there really is a problem??Thx

I didn't read all the pages of this thread but can sum this up pretty easy. I work in parts at a dealership. The rear bearings are part of the rear hub and do bolt on with just one large nut onto the spindle (easy do at home job). The front bearings are pressed into the front knuckles then have the hubs pressed into the bearing. Requires a hydraulic press-or-they make an on car press that you use an impact gun to press in and out with (not an easy do it yourself job). BTW front bearings are up to 82.12 list price at the dealership. Also FYI most shops charge between 30-60$ to press the bearings if you bring them the parts. You can save a little by doing the fronts yourself but only a big savings if you have access to a press.

I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I need help.

My right front bearing had gone bad. I had a new hub and bearing installed.

I then reattached the knuckle and put the axle through the hub. When tightening the axle nut, it was harder to turn.

When test driving the car, I knew something wasn't right but I couldn't pinpoint the problem. We drove it for about 20 or 30 miles that way.

Took the whole thing apart again, and discovered some metal shavings in the CV axle threads. This kept the nut from tightening completely and the hub wasn't completely flush against the axle & wheel. I cleaned everything, and it went together right this time.

Since the axle nut was not completely tightened, the bearing was apparently damaged. It makes the same noise as before it was replaced. I plan on replacing the bearing again.

My question: do you think I need to replace the hub as well?

So thats what that is. I been hearing sumthin like what was described by the original poster. Sounds almost like sumthin bouncin in my glove box, or even an RCA cable hangin in the dash and tapping sumthing on slight bumps. Now I know what to check

i had the same problem on my 2000 chevy. I had the brakes check several times and finally after the 10th visit they found it was the struts. No need to worry now, i have a 6th gen and will soon be purchasing a 5th gen so I'll make sure the struts are right before i leave the lot.

The big 1 1/4in nut that holds it on was loose! It managed to back all the way out to the cotter pin and the car was vibrating very bad. This is on a stock suspension 02 max with 63k on it. I tightedn the nut back up and it feels like a brand new carl

Ok i am getting a squeaking kind of scratching noise form my right front wheel well. Sounds like something is loose, but im not sure. It does not sound like my tire rubbing against the fender. I can't figure out what it is....sometimes i'll hear it and sometimes i will drive somewhere and not hear it.

It only happens when im driving straight...any ideas as to what it could be? the bearings?? how could i check??....any help would be greatly appreciated..

I had the same issue with the same wheel. I jacked up the car to find the wheel loose. Probibly what was causing the rubbing (on my car). Check it out ASAP! Bad bearings are dangerous.

Those nuts dont come loose. What has proboibly happened is the bearings have worn and created space so that the nut could come loose. I did exactly the same thing with mine. I tighened it and was happay as a clam. Then a couple of days later the whole problem came back again. Drive it to long like that and you could wear the spindle.

i have the same loose sound coming from my passenger side front end but its not the strut or wheel bearing. its the axle itself. checked it out yesterday the shaft has play in it and the joint boot is damaged with grease leaking out.

I had scraping noise at low speed from the front left for months.

They said it was the backing plate and tightened it.... twice.

And I still hear a very very slight rubbing noise

The mechanic said it could be bushings or bearings.

car has 40K miles

ok fellas my right bearing is bad and called the dealer and they want over $400. I decided to buy the bearing and called a local shop and they said they have a machine to insert/compress the bearing and charge $25, after reading the service manual it says "When removing wheel hub or wheel bearing from knuckle, replace wheel bearing assembly (outer race, inner races and
grease seals) with a new one". Do I have to buy any seals/gaskets? and if I understand the manual the knuckle is attach to the hub and I have to take it to the mech. to remove it, insert the new bearing and attach the hub back to the knuckle and all I have to do it put it back?

OK, I have a noise that I need an opinion on. I've read through this whole thread, and I've narrowed it down to two possibilities.

When decellerating in gear with no brakes applied, I am getting a cyclic low-moaning/do-do-do sound coming from my front right wheel well. As soon as I apply the brakes or pop the clutch, it goes away.

First, I thought wheel bearing, but the noise stay's the same going around a clockwise bend, and actually goes away going counter-clockwise in-gear coast. So, that's why I don't think it is a wheel bearing.

Now, I think it may be 1. A bad strut (looks like the illuminas will have to go on now...) 2. a bad strut bearing.

I can get a noise from the front strut coasting in neutral, and braking hard (to dip the front end) and releasing and so on, I can hear a groan/scratching noise coming from the front right. That makes me think it is a bad strut, but the car feels fine, and the gap is the same at rest on both sides of the car.

Also, why would a bad strut only make noise when coasting in gear? does the cyclic rotation of something inside the tranny propogate a vibration that somehow transfers into a slight vertical motion that would "rock" the bad strut causing the noise, but braking would cancel out the noise. Did that make sense lol?

The noise is only heard during in-gear rolls, but it is getting worse. It's not heard under hard accelleration or braking (except if I get the front bouncing by doing the brake on- brake off- brake on etc)

So, What do you guys think? I inspected the components yesterday, didn't fing anything loose, or leaking, etc. I have 4 illuminas and spring waiting in my garage, but I was going to wait to lower my car until next spring so I could not drive lowered through the winter time. (I'm going to buy a jeep next spring for the winter's up here) But, I don't want to do it if it's just a bad wheel bearing, which I'll replace. Thanks

How can I tell if my bearing is bad? My driver side front tire seems to be making a strange noise, not sure what it could be. I'll see if I can get a video/audio clip up soon.

hit a pothole on the highway to day and got a very bad shake in the front end of the car, took it into a mechanic and got all 4 wheels balanced, problem not solved. Not experiencing any strange noises. Car only does it around 120km/h. Mechanic didn't notice any play in any of the wheels. Could it still be a bearing

Cost me $400 for a wheel bearing AND an axle at an independent shop. I needed a new axle because the rotor for the ABS sensor got eaten up because I let the bad bearing go to long.

BTW, the bearing failed because the last person to work on the car either didn't adequately tighten the lock nut or for some other reason, the lock nut backed off and the excessive clearance at the bearing.

I had this problem on my 2k2 at about 110k miles. I had to replace the right rear hub and bearings. Total cost for me was about $350 ($220 parts + $130 labor).

I had to replace the passenger front wheel bearing and hub and the driver rear bearing/hub. Not at the same time though.

The front only made a noise at slow speeds with the wheel all the way turned, so I suspected it to be a bad cv joint, but it was the bearing.

And the rear went on me about a week ago. It sounded like a propeller plane was flying right next to my car when I would go about 50.
