2000 se, engine light on slight hesitation and sub idle
2000 se, engine light on slight hesitation and sub idle
Hey Guys,
My check engine light came on the other day ( k 30 days ago or so)
My car seems to hesitate at initial acceleration but then pulls itself into normal power range with rpm higher, also seems to sub idle when started, quick pump of gass and it sorta coughs and vroom it revs normal. By cough I mean no actual sounds but feels funny in exhaust, like pressure changes. Once engine is reved I feel the exhaust and car run normal, no hesitation.
Called Nissan, to make appointment to have it hooked up to diagnotstics ..80 $
I have a Frankencar air intake and never had problems with it before ( had it about year or so, less than 15,000 miles in that period)
Nissan dude said sounds like miss firing cylinder. I doubt it, had a few vehicle that had a cylinder go bad and u can tell. Don't you get fluid leaking from exhaust too at that point ?
The car still has pull just hesitates at begining.
I took off the Apexi filter and cleaned it the otherday before the problem was a s bad as it is now. No change noticed. with the Frankencar intake....I wouldn't have MAF sensor problems, like K&N right ? Not even sure if I still have a MAF sensor, but I don't oil my Apexi filter :P.....new, not completely dumb
Prob gonna take it to Nisssan to do the diagnotics, but better for me and my wallet if I have an idea of what I am talking about
Any help appreciated,
BTW anyone try the Frankencar exhaust ( cat back) ?
Thanks in advance

you should take your car to autozone for a free diagnostic test if you have one close by. when they pull the code, it will most likely be a bad coil(s). i forgot the code number but the 2ks had coils with a very high rate of failure. there was a petition to have it covered under a recall but i am not sure how far that went if anywhere. if you want to pick them up for cheaper then call dave burnette at south point nissan @ 888-254-6060. i think all 6 are around 300 shipped, give or take.
I know EXACTLY what you are experiencing. I had the same problemo recently. First I had some hesitation low RPM (1000-2200 rpm) and some minor idle stumbling while in Park... it was very subtle.... then a two weeks later SES went on. I did a reset ( unplugged battery) and the SES light went away, 4 days later, it (SES) came back. I did a reset and cleared it again. Then two days later, it came back again. I tried to clear it... IT DIDNT CLEAR - the SES light stayed on. ..SO i took it to Nissan.
NISSAN "your coils need to be replaced, you had some slight hesitation and rough idle right? ..... yup" so got it covered TSB. ( I have an ext. warranty BTW)
Everything was good BUT then a week later, same problem. SES light came on.
So i took it back to NISSAN.
NISSAN" your MASS AIR FLOW sensor is bad"...needs replacement.
Got it done and now my max is good to go! Shift is MUCH better and NO rough idle or hestitation in LOW RPMs.
GOOD LUCK. let us know what NISSAN says.

Your looking for MAF sensor. MAF = Mass Air Flow.
From what I hear on the org, contact DaveB or JRNissan. Sorry I dont have the numbers but check the Stickies near the top of the forums.
Good luck

my 2k se has done the same thing to me on two different occasions. the engine stumbles and there is alot of vibration in my shifter. the engine keeps stuttering at all speeds and in all gears. i havent had my engine light come on though.
could this be a problem with the coils or could other things be involved also?
