score ~ Brakes - 1, Me - 0

wanted to put on new front rotors + pads today, so i get everything off and the freakin 2 bolts that you need to remove from the caliper assembly are jammed tight. i sprayed some bolt loosener and just let it set for about an hour, and still almost ended up stripping the bolt completely.. i couldve changed out just the pads but figured that the old rotors are so badly worn it would have not been good for new pads. btw car has 60k and it looks like only the pads have ever been changed. tomorrow im gonna get a shop to put the rotors in for me and ask them to throw some anti-sieze on the bolts to make my life easier down the road ~

Did you use a 6 point socket with a ½" drive breaker bar to remove the bolts?

nah, i dont have a breaker bar. i'd buy one but its probably going to be around 40 bux or more for a decent one, and getting it done will be only a little more than that and save me a headache

This one is about $27 at Sears.

If you plan on doing more work on your car over the years, it will be a good investment. I keep one in my truck to remove my lug nuts if I have to change a flat tire.

tap the head of the bolts with a hammer, that sometimes will "break" any corrosion that could be locking the bolt in there....I just took mine off the other day....I just used a box-end wrench (the 6-pt end) in the size (17mm or 19mm as I recall) required. To improvise a breaker bar with a smaller wrench, take a large box-end wrench and interlock the end of it with the end of the smaller one....there you go, ghetto-fabulous breaker bar.

A torque wrench is not designed to loosen bolts, it's for tightening them.

Back in the day when I couldn't afford tools, I found a big piece of pipe that could fit just right over my 1/2" drive. Wayyyyy bigger than a breaker bar.

Now, I have air and big honkin guns for every occasion.

I don't recall having any trouble with my bolts luckily, though I probably loosened it with a torque wrench (didn't have anything else until I recently bought a cheap breaker bar from Autozone)

I use a 2 foot pipe that slide on top of my ratchet handle, so just need to show who's the boss.

Cheers

That's a good way to break the teeth in your ratchet head. If you encounter a really stubborn fastener and the teeth strip, you will be one sorry dude if you bust your knuckles or something. A cheater pipe on a breaker bar is better suited for breaking loose stubborn fasteners.
