Oil Consumption Problem??

I drive a 2k2 6spd SE with about 80,000 km. The motor seems to be consuming about 2 L of oil between my 5000 km oil change intervals. A couple of times now I've been caught of guard with the oil level dropping to the low mark at which time I top up the oil level with 1 L of oil. I do my own oil changes and when I'm under the car I haven't noticed any leaks. Also my direvway is clear. I think I'm actually burning through about 2 L of oil which seems a little high??? Most other cars I've owned have typically only needed about 3/4 L between my 5000 km oil changes. The consumption seems to be getting higher as the km on my car have increased. It's funny that this is happening to me because the day I picked up my car for the first time at the dealership there was a brand new Max in the shop with the engine completly disassembled. I asked what the problem was and was told they forgot to install the oil rings on the pistons durning assembly at the factory!!!! Now I only have to wonder....

That's a little odd... see if you can have a compression and/or leakdown test performed on your engine. That could reveal the culprit, if there is internal engine damage.

That's more than a little odd. You have something wrong that needs to be fixed. I've never owned a car that burned that much oil.

I suspect it is a leak. Get under the car and look with a good light. Look for the telltale oil and grime.

If it isn't a leak, your CAT is gonna clog in a hurry.

I had a 92 Maxima and changed oil every 5k miles. At 161k it suddenly started to use oil. Never had to add oil between changes before that. I did a compression check and the front 3 cylinders were real low. Back 3 were just fine. If you look at your exaust real close as some one revs the engine, you will probably see some smoke. I traded mine in on a 2002 Maxima GLE. Hope it is not as serious with your maxima.

I would do a compression test.

Well when I first got the car about 1L would do between my 5K km oil change interval. Now I'm up to about 2L that I need to keep the motor at the FULL mark. So yes it has gotten progressively worse.

Does anyone know what the difference between LOW and HIGH mark is in terms of number of liters?

It's about a quart, but right now my brain is in vacation mode, so I can't convert for you.

Well, maybe I can. 3.8L per gallon, correct? Soooo, .95L or so (that's assuming our dipsticks are the same, also)...
