and what has the subjective opinion re the 5th gen looks have any thing to do with the topic I started re the sporty Altima SE-R and the fact the Altima is occupying the role of the 5th gen Max and earlier once had in the Nissan lineup?

Also, I consider my 5th gen SE to be both sporty (5 speed stick, handles as well as many "sportscars" and is faster off the line than many) and luxurious (leather, heated seats, bose, auto climate control, etc.).....
Altima SE-R = Altima marketed for all the rich teenagers around these days, that's all.
from what I heard, its going to have anywhere from 260-265 HP. But HKmax is right, 5th gens got screwed in every single way. We get no respect from a lot of people. I have never seen a 5th gen commercial, yet I am tired of seeing the 6th gen and Altima commercials. Maybe we are the bastard child of Nissan.

I was talking in line with Maxima family. Comparing to 4th gen, 5th gen, and 6th gen. I do like my 5th gen Max, but it's not sportier than 4th gen (alas weight) and not luxurious than 6th gen (alas much more luxurious options).

ok...5th gen may not be as sporty stock, but add a RSB first and then other suspension mods (springs, illuminas, etc...) and it's a pretty damn sporty ride.
I had to laugh the other day when I gun it around a wet 90 degree corner at about 45 and the very nice Camaro SS tries to do the same and spins out....

HOw is the 4th gen more sportier than the 5th gen?
My mom has a 99 SE, and i have owned both the 2k2/2k3.
The 99SE does not handle much better than the 2k2/2k3 stock on stock.
The 2k/2k1 is pretty much teh same speed as teh 4th gen, despite the larger size.
Substantiate your comments.
I like the 4th gen but I don't see how its SPORTIER!

well is not any more.
Back when it was all about the 4th gens (1995-1999) The max was one of most sportier sedans from its class. It was hard to find a 4 door car with all the options plus a 5spd tranny. Now days with all the competition the Max is just another fast Sedan, but not sporty. As far as looks I think the 4th gen looks a bit more sporty because of the smaller size of the car. atleast looks smaller to me.

ok you guys are loosing it. your all saying that the 6th gen max is ugly, big, and slow, it has better e/ts than 5th gens, and its power is under rated, they have the second gen 3.5 motors and i have seen dyno resuts of 275 hp stock. and as for sporty there are rumors that nissan will be releasing a 2 door max for 06 which would mean next year. guys you all sound like your giving up on maximas, we have great cars that out run alot of the market, dont give up
2 door max? no thanks...the 6th gens are ugly enough as it is, though I do love the engine!!~!
Isn't it interesting that 95% of the 5th-genners here always say "my next car is gonna be a G35 or 350Z or whatever" but I don't think I've ever heard any 5th-genners (well, maybe 1 or 2) say "damn, my next car is gonna be a 6th gen maxima". I think that says alot about where Nissan is going with the maxima....into the toilet. The Altima is snapping at it's heels and for just a little more $$ you can just get an infinity. Plus, in the 4th (and 5th gen to some extent) the Maxima enjoyed a great advantage over its competitors - alot more power in the engine department. Now look around....for simlar $$ there are quite a few cars with as much or more HP than the maxima....
Plus, I drove by a local car rental place today and noticed there were at least 10 rental 2k4's in the lot....is the 6th gen the next big rental car? If so, that will kill the amount of people who want to own it...imho.
I fear that Nissan is, as mentioned above, changing the positioning of the maxima for it to compete against such cars as the Mazda Millenia,Toyota Avalon, and other semi-luxury cars, and pumping up the Altima as a direct competitor for the Accord, Camry, Mazda6, etc...
Remember when the Maxima used to be advertised as the "four door sports car"? Well, I doubt they would sell many 6th gens that way. But that logo could very well work for this Altima SE-R!!!!!
BTW I like my 5th gen plenty, and certainly don't feel "cheated" as someone noted above. But I really hope Nissan comes back to its senses for the 7th gen maxima, bc no way I would buy a 6th gen.....maybe just get a 6th gen engine and drop it in a 5th gen!!!!
rant over...

6th gen max = ugly, slow, overpriced, and did i mention ugly? Oh, and heavy, too. VERY heavy.
My wife loves my 2k2, she wants one of her own. She, like I, thinks the 6th gen is ugly!
And she drives a STRATUS!
Anyway, I love the concept behind the Altima SE-R but agree with the above poster who said the -R designation was tacky. What next, the Altima GT-R Type S RS 3.5 SE Spec V? lol.
Apparently the SE-R Altima uses a Skyline-based suspension...which does nothing for the fact that even with the revised interior for '05 it still looks cheap and low-rent. The grille is a joke. The wheels are atrocious, and the sideview mirrors look like Spec V rejects.
A 5th gen max with RSB/FSTB and a good strut/spring setup is still my choice! I would not trade my 2k2 on any altima, SE-R or not.
