2000 Max or BMW 325i

My apologies ahead of time for maybe seeming petty.. I have a 2000 Max GXE automatic. There is this extremely cocky stuck up dude that I work with who owns a 2002 BMW 325i standard and he thinks it's the sh##. I don't endorse street racing, but he can't stop talking about how his BMW would dust my 'slow piece of crap' Maxima. You know how somebody jst gets under your skin....lol Sorry if this is the wrong forum for this, but what do you think? Both cars are unmodified. I think my Max has 222hp with appx 200lbft tq, his is 187hp and I think 190lbft tq. It would be complete satisfaction to show him the taillights, but just the opposite if I see his...

Wont even be close...you will walk him by a mile so by all means have at it- but try to do it at a drag strip or other sanctioned (and safe) place

This is close, but I give 325 a very slight edge if it's 5 spd. BMW underates HP rating and it's RWD to boot. But it should be close.

It is a 5 speed. You know how people just talk down to people...he is one of those people. There is the ESTA Dragstrip here in upstate NY and it opens the end of this month. I may ask him if he'd like to join me.

If you had 5spd you would easily walk, but since you're auto and he is 5sp it should be close. Make sure you "manual shift" your auto trans. Do a little practice to get the timing just right. If you get it right I think you should win by a small margin.

OT: I used to live in Ithaca, NY. It's great that they're opening an official race track. I know people drag race in Erie Blvd on weekends. Now they can finally go to a real one, but I bet people will still race on the Blvd.

I've dont the manual shift before. I usually change gears around 6k. OT: The ESTA Dragstrip is in Cicero. It reopened a few years ago...not ba a $5 a run.. and people stil drag on Erie Blvd and Thompson Rd.lol

dba... Unfortunately no mods. I'm concerned with any effect it may have on my extended warranty.

IF he gets a good launch, He'll win. Gotta torque brake and not spin too much. Empty your trunk, shut off everythign in the car (windows,AC, radio).
My friend has a 325xi, it lacks power but speed goes up nicely.

Just launch and shift correctly the crappy auto and you'll be in front

oh dude don't start that. there have been many posts regarding that topic...what mods do you want to get? not all effect the warranty. plus if you are that concerned, you can always take some of the AM stuff off, prior to dealer service...just my 2 cents

I think that your max only has 218, not 222 like the SE and GLE. I had a hard time keeping up with a 325 on the freeway here in Ca. He's got a 5sp so he's got you at the start.

He runs 7 to 60 and 15.4 1/4, yours runs 7 to 60 and 15.6 in the 1/4 according to car-stats.com. I'm gonna give it to the bimmer. All you would need would be a Y pipe and intake and your should take him pretty easily.

i had a 2001 325i with manual before getting my 02 6-speed. I have beaten a friend of mine from stop to about 70 by a car and a half him in a Auto 01 GLE and me in the 325i. And this was with a pretty mild launch. If he can drive, I think he will take you. Now the 02+ would throw a pretty decent raping onto his ride. Still go to the track and find out, he may not be able to drive. Just make sure you torque brake.

HKMax is right on...

What does a dinan 850 have anything do to with this? That doesn't mean all BMWs are gonig to run like that. Ever hear of the 318? Besides, he already said he thinks they are stock...

What you really need to look at is the power to weight ratio. How much does his car weigh versus the 187hp. Your max is probably around 3500lbs. Also, is that 187 at the wheel or the crank. I believe our 222hp rating is at the crank (I may be wrong on this). For more info on hp and power to weight ratio, check out this article.

http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/...4/performance/

Once you figure that out, then you can get an idea of how close it might be.

A buddy of mine that I work with has a 2001 325 (manual) and on the way home I'll see him at the lights sometimes. So we'll do mini redlight races. He usually gets me at the jump but I (automatic) usually catch and beat him. If that helps.

From what I've read the BMW hp rating is to the wheels. I think it may be time for a y-pipe and intake. I want to hand it to this dude sooo bad.

All manufacturers quote BHP (brake horse power), which is measured at the crank. Some manuafacturers under-rate their cars for various reasons (eg, insurance premium, regulations etc) and some over-rate (eg, marketing, think Mazda).

Typically, BMW under-rates their HP ratings, I think, for insurance reasons. on a good day 330ci can pull 5.7sec 0-60. They rate this motor at 235hp. But I think it is well above 250, just my guess. I wouldn't be surprised actual hp for 325 is around 200.

But still, I wouldn't think you need all the mods to snag a win. You need to practice the manual shift and make sure your torque brake like mentioned above. But if you do all these mods you will have definite edge provided he stays stock.

The flip side:

Who cares who is faster? If you really want to embarrass the guy, ask him to compare car payments, and then laugh your way to the bank.

I considered a 325i. Way too small and slow, and the salesman talked bad about my maxima during the test drive. No thanks.

Again this is OT but... I like BMW interior. What's wrong with it? I think there is a reason that it looks stayed the same for 10 years. They did make subtle changes. Euro cars have the design that stands the test of time. They don't make dramatic changes to their cars too often like Japanese cars do.

That's the funny thing about European cars. You either love them or hate them. My friend has a 325i with sport package and while I'm impressed as hell with the handling, the cars interior just doesn't do it for me. It's the same with all the VW's and Mercedes I've been in. I prefer the waterfall type dashes as opposed to the square dashes of the European cars.

Yea, it's all in the personal taste. I guess that's why people who like Japanese cars upgrade to Lexus/Infiniti/Acura rather than jumping to Euro.

I have decided to get a new car. I have fallen in love with the new RL. 300hp v6, SH-awd, and a whole bunch of bells and whistles... and that will be my new ride soon to come. These pictures had me hooked.

honestly i think you have a chance, especially if the guy is a crappy driver. Race him best of 3. You'll probably get him 2 of 3 times from him launching crappy. Lower your front tire pressure to about 22 psi and raise your rears to 45 psi. (edit: this is based off tire pressures for 17" rims, i dunno about the 15 or 16 inch steelies, so use common sense) Don't do a burnout, unless you just want to spin a little dirt off your tires. Take out your spare tire and jack. And if you really wanna be sneaky, take out your panel filter. If you take out your A/C compressor belt you will win for sure, but that's a bit of trouble.

And to the guy who said GXE's have 218 hp. You're wrong. All 5.0 gen maximas had 222hp except for the AE that had 227hp (supposedly) also the GXE is the lightest and fastest model of the 4. Probably weighing in at around 3100lbs with driver. I think he's got a fair chance.
