Cattman Y-pipe and PowerTech 1012 muffler - first impressions.
I got my Cattman Y-pipe put on today by the good guys at Matt's garage (thanks Matt and Brian, if you read this). Before this, all I did to my exhaust was put on a PowerTech PT1012 muffler (same this as the 1011 model, just bigger tips). My initial impressions are as follows:
Sound: Very much improved. With just the PT1012 muffler, there was a deep sound that was more or less a smooth hum. At startup, there was a little rumble, and when I revved it and let go, there was a tiny bit of exhaust pop, as I call it. Now, with the addition of the Cattman Y, the startup is a deeper, more rumbling sound. It is deeper than a 350Z or a G35, much deeper than a Civic (can't compare at all), and not as deep as, say, a V8 Mustang. When I rev it, it growls deep, almost like the car is alive. Between 1200-2000 RPM, the growl is constant while reving slow. Finally, the exhaust is almost as loud as my Frankencar intake, and I love it. When I rev it up to almost redline and let go, the sound is deeper throughout the powerband, and it rumbles up and back down, with more exhaust pop when the RPM's go lower (with the pop being a much lower tone).
Performance: the butt dyno tells me that this was not only a good mod for sound, but also a great mod for an increase in peformance. At lower speeds/RPM's the car feels more lively, and it presses me in the seat more. At higher speeds, it does the same. It feels like HP was added throughout the entire powerband. I have not really gone higher than 5.5k RPM yet, but from what I could tell, it will pull better up there as well.
Overall, I recommend this to anyone with or without a PowerTech muffler (meaning, stock or with the PT muffler - I can't speak for any other type of muffler or exhaust setup). It sounds better, it feels better, and I like it a lot more than when it was all stock except for the muffler.

Arnold K: A y-pipe if combined with an intake will roughly give up to 17hp.
Glad it all worked out for you. I knew by adding the Cattman y-pipe that it would deepen the sound
Hate to get off topic, but how did you just get your fog lights on without the parking lights. I did the fog light rewire, but I can only can get the fogs and parking to come on at the same time.

if you want HP AND sound get the y-pipe and muffler.
the y-pipe is the single best performance mod especially on a 3.0. make sure you have an intake (even GAB will work) to get the most out of it.
the muffler is mainly for sound. the performance gain is minimal.
i have a y-pipe and love the HP gain and the sound. but i want a louder deeper sound so im adding the powertech muffler.
Nice choice with the Y pipe. I'm going to get the Cattman also but with the stock exhaust.
Not to stay off topic, but did you put amber bulbs in your parking lights before. I did that today and it looks hot.

Thanks.
You mean like this:

I had it like that before, but I personally like the look I have better.
Arnold, get an intake. I have the Frankencar setup (A'Pexi intake with Frankencar midpipe) which is around $200, shipped. A lot of people have Injen, but I heard that the price of that intake was raised quite significantly. There are others, like Weapon R (crappy filter), Berk (similar to Frankencar), and Place Racing (have to drill a hole in your engine bay, making it the only true Cold Air Intake).
My personal recommendation is the Frankencar, but they have been known to be shiitty with shipping, so the closest intake to that is the Berk.

Hotshot Headers / Y Pipe
Very nice, I was thinking of getting the same set up for my 03 6 speed MAX but I am still contiplating whether or not to go with the HOTSHOT HEADERS with the Y PIPE and keeping the stock muffler for an extra $240. The Cattman Y PIPE is $350 plus shipping and the POWERTECH MUFFLER is a Little over $110 plus shipping. So I am figuring it will total a little over $500 for both to buy and ship. SouthWest AutoWorks has the HOTSHOT HEADERS / Y PIPE for $599 with free shipping. I heard the HOTSHOT setup is sweet and gives some nice gains. What does everyone think?

LithiuMax, Is it possible to do a sound clip with the Y-pipe added? Did the Y-pipe make the exhaust sound louder than before. I have the same setup minus the Y-pipe, Did you think your exhaust before sounded a little ricey at lower RPM's? I'm trying to decide if I'm going to get the Y-pipe.

2k3, yeah, those were the stock bulbs in the parking lights.
crispy, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It is probably the best "go" mod out there for these cars, that is under $499.
hct67, thanks. I believe that you can't go wrong with either setup, and I might have considered the headers if not for the fact that it would void my pretty new warranty.
Bob, thanks man. I'm sure I'll see you around sometime soon.. as for the 10hp, I dunno. I hope it gave that much. I can always think it did..
thomas, I don't really have any way of doing a sound clip other than with my dad's video cam, and that would take a while with all the eiditing, because I have never done anything like that. If I have time to do some clips, I will, but don't hold your breath. My exhaust did get louder, but it got deeper at the same time. Hard to explain, but the overall effect made it sound quasi-orgasmic. As for the lower RPM/rice issue - I don't think that my exhaust has ever sounded ricey. It was never high pitched, "bumble bees in a can," and now, as I've said, it's even better. Hope that explains it.

I think that it is starting to quiet down a little. Not sure if there is a breaking in period. I know for the first 2 days I smelled a weird burning smell, which I'm pretty sure is the packing in the muffler. But anyway, thanks for the replies.

Time and Garage
Well I have the time plus I have a shop where I go so I can put the Max on a lift to do the work. I am sure it will take all day but then I always like doing my own mods. Great way to learn about the Max. I will start saving now for the HotShot Headers and hopefully working some Overtime I will get them byt the end of June and have them on by July.
