WTF Tire wear already
WTF Tire wear already
I just rotated my tires for the first time. I have 7k on my max and the outside tread on the front tires are worn down pretty good. My rears still look brand new. I check tire pressure on a regular basis and keep it at 31 psi. Is this normal?
I find it weird that both the fronts are worn on the outside. Is that a characteristic of an alignment. I mean my car tracks perfectly straight when i take my hands off the wheel and my steering wheel is pefectly centered. Just a thought, could it be like that since it is fwd? All the turning and cornering. I would be pretty ****ed if i need an alignment already, the car is still brand new. thanks for the quick responses guys.

Sounds like you're drive pretty hard, if allignment was out, the car wouldn't track straight.
Try taking corners a little slower.
I have 23k miles, rotated about every 6-7k, and still have at least 15k left. These tires aren't that bad, except in the snow they suck.

Is your car lowered at all? I used to work for goodyear and it seems like If only the outsides are wearing, that can mean camber wear. Alignment and rotation would also help if thats the problem. What we used to do was, flip the tire to even the tread for those that wanted it...meaning, flip the tire on the rim so that the side not as worn is back out on the worn down side.

Improper alignment causes excessive tire wear
I say this is normal, mine is all stock and the tires are worn hard on the sides, I think it's from driving like your suppose to with this car. I'll bet anything that you don't have LSD, I'm still trying to get used to handling this cars power, especailly out of the corners. When the wheel is turned, the tire also leans to the side, add no LSD + 255 horses you get uneven wear. I've got my sides worn, and only 10K miles on the car. Keep an ear open for tire spin, if you can cut down on that; the uneven wear will stop.
Have the alginement checked. Just beacue it tracks straight doen't mean it's in spec. Bad camber or toe will wear tires on inner or outer edges.
I have my Max and another very powerful FWD car, and I've never worn the outer edge on any of my tires. 14k on my Max, rotating the tires every 7500 miles and those are wearing evenly across the tread . If anything, I wear the inner edges on the rear tires of my other car because I have a lot of negative camber on that one for performance.

I have always ran the fronts at 35 PSI and the rears at 34 PSI. If the car is tracking correctly I'd say alignment is not your issue. My first thought would be under-inflation. Your wear is a symptom of that, especially as it's common to both front tires where the greatest amount of weight resides due to the engine. The opposite (wearing in the middle) is generally an over-inflation issue.
