2000 Maxima SE Axle Leak
2000 Maxima SE Axle Leak
I have a 2000 MAxima SE, 5 speed with 73,000 miles. It has recently developed a leak on the driver's side axle where the axle attaches to the transmission. I have had the axle sel replaced by a Nissan shop and the leak has gotten worse.
Any thoughts?
I have heard about bearings going bad in the axle, and I am aslo wondering if the shop may have put to much trany fluid back in when they replaced the axle seal.
Thanks!

I had my axle seal start leaking a few weeks ago at 108,000 miles. I had it replaced at the shop and the leak stopped, they didnt have to replace any bearing in there I dont even think there is one cause the input shaft goes into the transmission gearing.
I dont think it would leak because they put to much fluid. Make sure is not leaking from somewhere else, like higher where it could drip and seem to come from the axle seal.....they should have given u a warranty on the job, take it back, maybe they damaged the seal when they put the axle back in it.

This should be interesting. I just talked to the shop and they told me that the mechanic put too much trany fluid back in when he replcaed the axle seal. I'm with you on the fact that it should not leak with too much fluid, but I think they REALLY added some extra fluid and did not know the exact capacity of the manual transmission.
I should have it back today, and will let you know the outcome.
They also said they were going to run it while it is up on the rack to make sure there is nothing else wrong in that area that could be causing the leak. The shop seems decent enough to keep working with, but you never know....
Thanks for the info!

The axle seal was replaced with the correct amount of fluid added back. The leak is still there, but not as bad as it had been. I think I am going to have the axle replaced and see what happens. If that doesn;t get it, it may be time for a trade in.
