maxima.org IRC channel (5th gen)
maxima.org IRC channel (5th gen)

hi
a few of us are getting together an IRC channel for .org members.
as of right now it's not sponsored by the site or anything like that, it's just a place for members to come hang out and talk in realtime.
and I don't want to hear anything about,
"oh it's been tried before, never works, don't bother.."
I know it's been tried before, we're trying again.
so come, right now if you want.
the channel is on irc.gamesurge.net
channel name is: #maxima.org (surprisingly enough)
----------
for people who have never used IRC before, and/or have no idea what it is, I'll explain as simply as I can:
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. sounds intimidating, it's not. it's just your standard chat room network that anyone on the internet can use.
1) go to http://www.mirc.com and download the latest mIRC client. install it.
2) once you install it, open it up, and fill out the little popup form that has the box for your nick and all that other stuff (for future reference, your "nick" on IRC is your name).
3) in the main window, type /server irc.gamesurge.net -- this is the server that our channel (channel is another name for chat room) is on.
4) after you type this, wait a couple of seconds, and a bunch of stuff will spam down the screen. after it stops, you'll probably get a little popup box with a channel list to choose from, and a box to enter your own channel name. in that box, type #maxima.org -- this will enter you into the room.
** if you don't get the little popup box with the channel list, just type /join #maxima.org in the main window.
5) that's it... you're done. if it's your first time it might seem like a little much (if not, good), but you'll get the hang of it.
----------
IDLING: it would help keep the channel alive and help growth a LOT if people would idle in the room, even when not chatting, and when away from their computers.
the reason this whole idea of a maxima.org chat has probably failed in the past is because people leave when they're done talking, and when someone new comes in and sees only 2 people in the room, they leave too. eventually it just dies.
so, if you join us to hang out, don't shut IRC down when you're done if you can help it! mIRC (the program itself) takes up almost no system resources on your computer, and won't slow down anything else you're doing at all.
----------
ok, that's about it.
again...
irc.gamesurge.net
#maxima.org
come hang out.

I was on off and on. I wish they had an audible warning when someone typed something like MSN messenger has. I missed quite a few people trying to see who was there while I was on. I will be checking it out whenever I am on the org.
