different guage wires help

ok, looking at a bunch of how to's, they mention 14,16,18 guage wires...I went to home depot and asked for 18 guage wire (14,16's were in a box and I wanted the same for 18 guage) he asked me what I was doin with it, so I told him im gonna rewire my fogs...he said 16 guage is prolly better, so I picked up like 6 boxes of 16 guage 24'...My question is which way can you default? can I use 16 guage if the writeup says 14 guage, or 16 if it says 18? or is there really a problem using 16? Sorry for asking this question...Im sure its been asked before, but I couldnt find it...Any help is greatly appreciated.

I always use a bigger wire than they recommend if you can't get the size they recommend, cause then it won't be trying to push more current through a smaller wire. Bigger wire equals smaller gauge (18 is smaller than 16). In the end it probably wouldn't matter, but thats what I would do.

The phrase "bigger is better" would aply to this situation.
