Is it safe to disconnect the motor mounts?

Hi,

I just found out my motor mount/mounts are gone because I keep hearing a buzzing sound. A friend of mine said why would I just disconnect the power to the mounts....

Can someone tell me if this can be done? How could/would I disconnect the power to the motor mounts?

Do you guys think this is safe? Or will my motor jump through the hood?

Thanks in advance

Buzzing sound does not sound like motor mounts. Can you please explain the sound more.

Alright my bad.

The engine mount (electronic one) is controlled by the ECM. The ECM controls thge engine mount operation corresponding to the engine speed and the vehicle speed. The control system has a 2-step control (hard/soft). At idle with vehicle stopped the mount is soft and when driving the mount is hard. The electric mount is the front mount by the way. I really don't know what it would do without being connected to the inputs. It wont rip through the hood but I dont know if it will default to hard or soft. If your car is still under warranty, it may be covered. If it is not under warranty, you could either get factory replacement or a place racing poly mount (basically hard all the time).

Hope this helps

Thanks for the replies....

I think the front and rear mounts are electric... the side mount and tranny mount I think are not electric...

I tried to disconnect the wire to the front mount but the plug/connector is a SOB...

Im just going to take it to the dealer to figure out which exact mount is gone...

Can anyone here get a dealers discount? I heard there was a coupon going around for dealerships..... Does anyone have it here?

I've heard of motor mounts but this is a first I ever heard of electric motor mount. I thought they are usually made of hard rubber bushing, even liquid-filled one. Electric? That's a new one to me. I probably haven't noticed under the hood on mine

its not electric like you might think....
it has liquid in it.. and then it gets a charge which makes the liquid stiffin up and soften depending on speed/rpm

(that is what i learned from reading posts here)

I just had the same problem 2 days ago. My front electronic mototr mount would work continuosly after I turned the car off. I disconnected it and the noise went away. The connection for the front one is a Red/Orange connector directly above the motor mount.

"gets a charge"? I find that highly unlikely. More likely is that there is a motor or solenoid that twists something inside the motor mount which loosens/stiffens the insides somehow.

IIRC, it's a magnetic particle filled fluid that when you induce current they align themselves becoming more viscous/less viscous. Not 100% sure how it all works, but I've heard of it before in C5s for the magnetic controlled dampers for ride stiffness.

Anyways, I'm not sure if you'll get a CEL from disconnecting them, but an advantage is that you eliminate the possibility of the torn mount allowing it to short/burn out the ECU. Yes, it does happen and DAVEB has said it's not uncommon.

I hope that's not what you're hearing.

Looking at the FSM, looks like at least one model has BOTH front/rear electronic mounts.

At idle they are soft, but once the engine reaches 2000+rpm, they switch to hard.

Also, it appears the EM1 at idle is soft(0-1V) and at 2000+rpm it's hard(Battery Voltage), but the EM2 at idle is hard(Battery Voltage), then switches to soft(0-1V) at 2000+rpm.

Now that I think about it, people have PR poly mounts without a CEL, so unplugging them won't cause a CEL.

ICE, Your correct unplugging them will not cause CEL. I did it 2-3 days ago without getting CEL as of yet anyway!

Heh that's interesting, a magnetic oil in our motor mounts. Neat
