Have 95 -want to upgrade to '02-'03 but unsure of problems...please help
SubscribeHave 95 that has given me alot of problems. I am looking to get an 02'-'03 w/meridian pkg & NAV. But after looking at TSB information on http://www.alldata.com/ it looks like there are alot of probs still with the "02-"03. The ones that bother me specifically are : cold starting problems
sunroof operating by itself
driver's seat not moving forward or backward
NAV stuck on "please wait" screen
Can anyone let me know how or if these things have affected them? My wife has been pushing for an Acura. I hate to say that I may have to do it if things aren't quite right w/02-03 Max.

cold starting problems - None.
sunroof operating by itself - Never.
driver's seat not moving forward or backward - Never.
NAV stuck on "please wait" screen - I've encountered this once but I'm certain what caused it (not detailed here). A NAV problem I have encountered on more than one occasion is "Disc error." Never occured under driving conditions, only at startup. Seems to be with one particular CD I use on occasion but I have had it on others discs as well. No big deal (yet) and an off/on cycle of the ignition seems to be the only "fix" (pain-in-the-a** when it happens). tried unit on/off and disc eject/re-insert to no avail.
The only other issue I have had is minor "hood shake" and I'm awaiting dealer resolution under warranty (as you know service sucks in general). Some report more severe problems with this.
Like most, I've owned many rides from a 48' *****'s to the current Max (to include an Acura) and as you know they all have pros and cons. I wouldn't try to talk you out of certain Acura models though, sweet cars. Good luck.

I understand your concerns. Previously I owned an 89 SE that for the most part was flawless during the 13 years I owned it. The exception being the power antenna that needed to be replaced 4 times. The person who owns it now reports that its still running fine (175K+ miles).
In 01 I bought a new 02 SE. Ignoring the recalls, I have been extremely happy with the car, for reasons that I probably don't need to explain. Fortunately for me my service dealer has been very good about getting items repaired. I've had 8 recall/warranty items to date. Pretty unnerving for a car that is 2.5 years old (25k+ miles). The ones that concern me are the O2 sensor/MAF/radio replacement ones. The radio especially since this is my 3rd. I'm still hopeful that Nissan won't disappoint me in the long run.

Thanks to everyone that replied. You have been really helpful. To be honest I don't think that I am going to go with another Nissan. After researching the TSB info there are just too many probs. For me the cold start issue is one the really frustrated me w/my 95. It really bothers me that those w/ newer models still have the same prob too. In looking at infinitis the Q45 even has the same issues as the Max & I35. My next move will be an Acura or the Chrysler 300C. I can't sink any more $ into a Nissan. They charge to $ but the product is not up top par w/ the competition, speifically Toyota and Honda.
Don't get me wrong - I have always been a Nissan fan and will probably remain one. Waiting for the day for them to get things together. But when it comes to spending hard earned money. I'm going to have to go with a better made product. I'll let you all know how things turn out. Thanks!

Hey i think your missing the point.
FIrst off, you can't go by TSB's to judge a cars reliability. Even toyotas and HONDAS had TSB's galore.. Just look up the new TL, its plagued!
For starters, I owned a 2k2 before my 2k3.
PRoblems with my 2k2 were minor but extremlely annoying:
1. Warping rotors
2. Dimly lit check engine light
3. Broken engine mount (i did that myself LOL)
4. Grindy tranny
5. and a bunch of other irratances..
but my 2k3?
I have not made ONE warranty claim as of yet, and only took it to the dealer for one service at 36,000kms.. i have now 44,000kms, and i drive the crap out of my car.. No SES lights, no problems.
NO MAF problems either, my car has NEVER EVER seen a stock intake before as I installed my frankecnar w/apexi filter since the FIRST day i bought it.
I never had a cold start grind before either on both my 2k2, 2k3.
And my 2k3 rotors warped after 35,000kms and soon to be replaced with my new sTILLEN x0drilled.
No matter what car you get, you will be getting TSB's
The chrysler 300c, well, damn dude, if you think that MAxima's got issues, good luck with that one.
Honda's had MANY problems, especially with automatic transmissions, and toyotas had problems with insufficient oil on some of their motors.
ALL IN ALL, any new car you buy is a piece of $hit. My dad's BENZ is the biggets of all POS and for that i will never ever buy another benz again.
Sorry to hear about your 95.
My moms 99 Maxima SE auto is by far the most reliabile car I have ever seen.
160,000kms and only 2 dealer claims in the entire HARD DRIVEN LIFE of the car!!!
1. Frozen rear caliper
2. ABS module malfunction
both replaced under warranty.
Car is immaculate, I just installed GR'2s onher maxima, and it drives better than my 2k3 on H&Rs lol
