What rotors to get? Stock ones are junk

Well my wifes car has the terrible stock rotors on it, that warp every 5,000 miles and shake like crazy when slowing down.

She does not need high performance rotors and pads, but I want a good set on the car. What is a good reasonable rotor and pad, and what are we looking at for pricing? I will do the install myself so labor won't be a factor.

Thanks!!!

John

i would go with brembo blanks and hawk or bendix pads. i am currently using bendix IQ pads and have no complaints. i plan to go with the brembo blanks once my stock warp again.

I think its the way your wife drives if anything. Going on 30k miles on stock rotors and pads with ZERO problems whatsoever and that includes stop and go driving and highway driving. 2003 SS max.

My mechanic got me ENTRIC rotrors from a local part store

They are oem replacements, but are made from stronger steal (premium rotors). These rotors are made in Japan. I had them installed paired up with oem pads, so far no squeaking or any noises.

I got them for $100 for a pair (front)

I second the Brembo blanks. They're cheap (~$50/ea) and they're Brembo. They've been great so far on my car. I went with Nissan pads which last long and are quiet. I got the nissan pads from dave b for ~$45. I've seen some good postings on the hawk pads. If you look in this forum:

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=311683

some folks are recommending frozen rotors which are about the same price as the Brembos. I don't know anything about them so I've nothing to offer there.

You might have to try some cryo-treated rotors. Members have had good luck with them. You also might want to try brake pads that aren't semi-metallic. ie.. carbon metallic etc.. performance friction and raybestos both make good alternatives to semimetallic pads. Less dust, more rotor friendly and less brake squeek.

slag,
the 00 and 01 brakes are notorious for being bad. didn't they change the brakes for the 5.5 gens? i would assume your 03 has better brakes than almost any stock 00 or 01.

get rid of the little 5th gen brakes. Get Matt blehm's kit....works like a charm. uses large 2k4 maxima rotors with your stock calipers. Only thing you need to have is either factory 17" rims or aftermarket rims...they won't fit under the factory 16's...

here's a link: www.mattblehm.com

you want the kit that uses OEM calipers, not the one that uses the 300Z calipers...

Thanks for the replies.... I think Nissan should have done something about the rotors the first 5 times I brought it in with the same complaint. They also told me it's a "Known issue" but never said anything could be done about it.

So where's the best place to be Brembo's or Frozen? I see frozen has prices on it's web site, is that the best price?

Also how do you get in touch with the David B? I sent him an email but never heard anything back from him.

Thanks!!

you can get brembo blanks from a few sites. I got mine from tirerack. you can get them a few dollars cheaper elsewhere, but i've bought from tirerack before so i just went with them. Don't know anything about frozen, not until a few days ago when someone started the new thread here. I usually just call dave b. he seems to be a pretty busy guy. here's the number, just ask for him 888-254-6060.

also, when you get your new rotors, don't forget to wash them (soap and water, gets the oil off completely) before installing them. good luck.

The screen name of the guy you fellas want to talk to for OEM parts hookups is DAVEB (no spaces). The other guy on this site uses the name Dave B and does not work for Nissan parts as far as I know...

Just thought I'd let you guys know...just in case you were emailing/pm'ing the wrong guy!

I have a 2k max and I have 70k miles on it with the orignal rotors and pads. I have slight little bit of warping, but not too noticeable. I think the rotors, esp. the front are a little to small for the car and get too hot.

I'm going to replace them soon with OEM rotors with ceramic pads. This should help reduce the temps as well as be quieter and create less dust.

The 2K2 and later front rotors are a different size than the 2K1 and earlier ones. Last time I checked, Brembo did NOT have blanks for 2K2. This may have changed, but it would be worth it to check with Brembo before you buy any of them. About a year ago, this was absolutely true, but again, it might have changed since. I purchased Raybestos rotors and they seem to have held up pretty well so far. I've got about 27K on them and I've gone through one set of pads so far. I've got a slight vibration, but it is minimal and these rotors are holding up much better than the OEM ones did (which I previously had replaced under warranty at about 14K).

Here's a Group Buy on the Brembo blanks. And Jason is a top notch guy to deal with.

Okay folks. I decided to check again. Here is a link to a .pdf file showing all available products from Brembo. Check out Nissan Maxima and you will see that for '02 and '03, the product is listed as "Not Yet Available". The rotors being sold as Brembo's are either fakes or the wrong size, sorry.

I went with Brembo Blanks all around, Bendix ceramics in the front. I'm also trying not to put myself in situations where I have to slam on the brakes(ie. keeping more distance between me and others).
