GXE dash kit & blue LED accent under A/C installed today!

Well, I finally got around doing some mods today. I replaced my Metra kit with a GXE dash kit for my stereo and also installed some blue LED's under the A/C unit to give that night-time light overlooking the shifter. For those who want a nice OEM look for your aftermarket headunit, I highly recommend the GXE dash kit over any kit! Much better looking. I removed all the pieces of my Oxford Burlwood dash kit from the center dash components. Now, I think it looks much better without it. For the A/C unit, I removed the accent light, and replaced it with four 5mm (5000mcd) LED's. At night, this looks very cool. I have a nite pic on my homepage. So, what do you guys think? Here are some before and after pics.

Where did you get the idea for the 4 LED's under the AC controls?

Actually, I had this in mind long back in the winter time when I did the door switches. I just didn't have enough free time since the wheather warmed up. I had the GXE kit sitting around about 4 months. I did the A/C vents a while back, and I knew what my next project was going to be. I saw your write up, and been following your posts. Very nice. Don't worry, I'll give credit when credit is due. It's all good.

Here's a few nite pics. I'll try to take some better ones. My camera doesn't capture nite pics too well.

Did you drill out the little plastic piece and stick the LED's in there. This is one of the cheapest mods, and a whole lot easier than trying to figure out how to put a neon light in that area. Does it sort of dim at night when your stereo is pumping?

Where did you get that blue led in the clock from and dose it stay on all the time or it will turn on and off with stock alarm?

No. I took that clear plastic piece out and mounted the led's on a strip of plastic. I had used an old piece of plastic from a radio trim plate I had lying around. My lights do not dim when my stereo pumps. I have high quality, heavy guage wiring throughout my system which makes a huge difference.

go to local radio shack & ask for blue led...they only have one...then cut out your stock red led (where clock is) & solder the blue led in its place...then it only goes on when alarm is activated

There's a guy on Ebay from Japan that sells 50 pack LED's real cheap. I had bought (2) 50 packs of blue LED's--3mm and 5mm. For the clock, I just removed the red LED, and soldered a blue LED in its place. It functions the same. I had also tapped another security LED in one of the blank spots on the guage bezel.

What ohm and watt of resistor did you use for the illumination light under the AC controls?
And with the LED in the clock just be sure to note which is + and - when you put it back.

I believe the resistors I have are 1/4 watt at 400 ohms or so.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, you must host the pictures somewhere online like Cardomain.com or any other websites that hosts pictures.

VERY very nice...now lose the REST of the wood.

Good idea on the LEDs...I'd have to have a switch for on/off though.

Thanks for the comments. Yeah, I was thinking of tapping a switch to it too. In fact, I have a switch for the LED's in the A/C vents. I'll probably tap into there to turn both on/off at the same time. As far as the wood dash kit, I was thinking of removing it, but I like the pieces on the door switches, and especially on the gauges. It (the guage bezel) makes it stand out, and accents off some of the other pieces. When I installed this kit, I thought it was TOO MUCH, with all the pieces. But, thanks again for the comments!
