Yet another SES question

My SES light came on Sunday and I was unable get to autozone to get a code. Today the light is off. Does that mean the problem went away? Does the car store codes in some memory that can be read later so I can find out what set it off?

Yes. This means that the ECU completed a certain amount of normal driving cycles without a re-occurance of whatever trigered the code in the first place.
