why cut your bumpstop?

i'm ordering my illumina's in the next couple of days and i see that you have to shave 1/3"-1/2" off the bumpstops. i'd just like to know if it's mandatory and what the benefit is.

because you will hit the bumpstop before the spring and strut can fully compress. you will lose travel in the strut and if you hit a nice size bump be prepared for crushing your spine.
