PLEASE HELP w/problem

I was hoping someone might have some ideas whats going on with my max. I was driving tonight and the battery light flickered on then went off. Within the same minute the gas gauge went from 1/4 full to empty and the gas light came on- then went off and the gauge read 1/4 again. (actuall was 1/4 I got gas it only took 14 gallons). The battery light came on and off a few more times before staying on permanently after I filled up at Shell. Then the brake light came on so now both lights are on permanently.

HISTORY:
'01 Anniv. Max 66k
Very well cared for- all major services done myself.
NEW BATTERY <2mths old- just felt like it was time.
Recently did belts (2months ago) and yes, they are tight.
I have had a reflash of the ecu and replaced an 'O2, Plugs 5 months ago

Symptoms:
None besides the above mentioned.
Lights and all assesories work fine, no variation or dim lights at all- although the windows never seem to roll up as fast as I would like. Before stopping from my 1 hour drive tonight I taxed the electrical system by putting on the high beams, stereo, rolled all windows/sunroof and everything was fine- car restarts with a seemingly well charged battery. The temperature is fine- mileage above normal 22.18.

I would think it was the alternator and it may be but would this cause the brake light to come on? Also it doesn't really act like it's that- furthermore the brake light coming on tells me short- but where?
Can Pep Boys check for shorts?

I've read that SHELL has put out some crap gas that's melting the contacts in the sending unit- could this be possible? I've heard it was only in FL. though and they have taken care of it- (afer shutting down 400 gas stations last week in FL- something about the refinery not removing the Sulfar in the gas during the last step in the refining process)

If anyone has had a similar experience or just good overall suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated. You can also reply directly to hrrecruiter45@yahoo.com Thanks guys- you rock!
