Gas Mileage...please read

I was just wondering when you're on the highway or wherever and going about 75 what are your rpm's up to??...mine is a 5spd and on cruise control it seems normal at 3000 but i'm not sure and it just seems like my gas is going so quickly so i wanted to check to see nothing was wrong or unusual...

Yes, you will burn gas pretty quickly at 3k rpm. Try driving at 2k or even less for a change, you will see better gas mileage. But then you will be going 65 mph or slower, so it's a trade off.

Yeah, I just got my 00 SE 5spd, and I noticed the same thing. I not sure if i'm just not used to having a 6( I had a 4 ). Whenever I do 80, I'm turning at out 3000rpm+. I still get about 27 mpg highway, but it seems like it's 3 rpm is a bit high. Not really used to the car yet...I'm guess this is normal...right??

Mine is an auto. At 75mph, I'm at 2500 rpm. On an all highway drive, I'm getting about 27-28 mpg; 17mpg mostly city. Tire size will have some impact. I'm on 225 50 x 17.5 (not craptenzas - lol).

I've always felt my car runs pretty high on the interstate. I go around 75 and it's just around 3000 RPM. I still get pretty good gas mileage so I figure it's ok. I think our cars, '00-'01, could have really used the 6-spd close ratio too. Not only for acceleration but also for MPG.

I don't know if this is too off-topic, but I have an '03 SE and was wondering if anybody else has noticed a huge difference between the mpg that shows in the Trip computer and the actual (ie divide number of miles by number of gallons to fill up at the gas station)?

I have reset the mpg on the Trip computer when I fill-up, but I have noticed some fill-ups where the trip computer vs. actual will be as much as a 3-5mpg difference! Is this normal, or can it be fixed?

I have a 200 se auto and I used to get terrible gas mileage above 75 mph. When I installed my Frankencar intake I started getting much better mileage all the way up to around 90 to 100 mph. It also increased my miles per tank by 15. Not to mention the fact that I gained a lot of high end power. Just thought that I would let you know, I highly recomend the mod.

Don't take this the wrong way, because I am very interested in hearing about any mods that help out fuel economy. But, if you're increasing your miles per tank by only 15, then that isn't much. Since the tank is about 18 gallons, that would be increasing the mpg by less than 1 mpg. Is that right, and if not, what kind of mpg increases did you see? Just curious.

I'll just repeat what everyone else has been saying, but I've got a 2000 SE 5spd, and when I'm on the highway, I actually set my cruise at 3K RPM, just to see what kind of gas mileage I get lately, and I'm always moving along at 76-77 MPH. Unfortunately, I'm only getting 24-25 mph (I have no mods as of yet either), but I think it just needs tuned up. This is probably the most common of knowledge, but the manual says it's more fuel efficient to have your A/C on instead of having your windows down, due to the drag, if you're going over 40. Honestly, I can't tell you if it's true or not. Shifting under 3k is a plus for higher MPG.

With my 01 auto i''m pulling about 2600 RPM's at 75, and that gives me pretty good mileage. This last weekend I made a 300mile trip at about 90mph the whole way and got like 21.5 miles per gallon, so not too bad.

<-- Drives Highway a LOT! Most of the time a 75MPH cruse would be 2300~2400RPM depending on how strong the head wind is. A 80MPH cruse would set the RPM between 2500~2600. 3000RPM cruse would put me at 90~100MPH. All this is 6th gear ofcourse, Gas mileage ranges from 23-26MPG ( I calculate this in a more accurate way, NOT using the stupid trip computer)

Crusing in 5th gear is around 2500RPM@ 65MPH, about 3000~3100RPM@75MPH. Usually I don't cruse in 5th gear unless I'm preparing to pass someone 4th Gear just screams for highway racing (But gas burns pretty quick too)
