Best Radar Detector Placement???

My radar detector is right in the middle of my windshield for best vision for me and also line of sight 360 degrees is good but it rattles pretty bad with the system up...i tried moving it up but i didn't like it high so I put it low where it barely clears the windshield wipers and it doesn't rattle at all but do you think that the line of sight out the back window matters??? I always heard it was good low bc police aim guns at license plate but i wasn't sure if the rear detection sensitivity would decrease bc its not a direct line of sight out altho i'm sure the signal just bounces of windshield easy enough...I have a Bel Vector 985...any thoughts or personal experiences.....

dont worry about line of sight from the rear. you normally get hit with radar from the front so they have a head start on catching you! place it low as u can on the windshield. Cops dont like to see it in the window cause they know you are trying to decieve them, so i always hide it under the seat if i get pulled over as well. Lower on the windshield doesnt obstruct my view. thats my biggest concern as long as it works. I use a Escort Passport 8500 if u care.....

the rear sensor is only for laser. and it doesnt really matter since if they get you with laser you are screwed anyway.
check my webpage to see where i placed mine. i had to do some modifying but now i can completely conceal it.

mine is right above my rearview mirror, the black/blue shade covers the radar so you cant see it at all from the outside, and the radar catches cops real well from faaaar away, and i think its better for hills as well, i got the escort 8500

V1

mine is pretty much in the same place as Igs', it catches cops veeeeery good from faaar away...well about placing it to conceal it is totally up to the person's taste. If cops stop ya, there's nothin much you can do anyways. Well yeah, they won't like to see that radar just like hanging there in front of them but what can u do, u've already been pulled over. I'm using V1 so i'm all good for now

below your rear view mirror. Dont place it behind any tint.

I hope you dont leave it in the window like that when you are not in the car. You need to take it down when you get out of the car. I cant tell if it is fixed or not, but heat is extremely bad for radar detectors. I had to get mine reprogrammed last summer.... after i got a ticket! reprogramming $60 ticket $pending

no problem with heat. If it is real hot outside I use a windshield cover in front of the detector so the detector isn't shown.

Here is another pic:

Whats wrong puting detector above rear view mirror , where the original blue tint is ? I think it works just perfect for laser or any other bands from far away

Valentine told me that the tint on the Maxima would not depreciate the V1 by that much. It's mostly the copper looking tint on some American cars.

Y2K1JKSE: Do you guys have the exact same detector?

I have mine hardwired above the rearview mirror too. I may try moving it below that blue strip just to see if there's any difference...

My V1 got all F*ucked up somehow (probably heat) and it will say that there is laser coming from behind a lot.

At some point I will have to send it in to get fixed.

only metalized tint. Not all tints are metalized.

The link I have seen here are dead I had one of my installers do it at my previous job. He tapped into the map light. Just find a 12V switch on one of the wires with a test light and use the other wire for ground. It is easy if you have the right tools.

When I first started driving in the 80's, I used to use the clip to mount my RD to the visor, but got a lot of false positives. I was told it's better to mount it lower on the windshield, so moved it to the dash, and got a lot less false positives. So I've done it this way since. So perhaps it picks up better up high, but because of that, gives you more false positives. I would like to get it up out of the way though. But seems I was also told the tint can mess it up.

I'm actually trying to find a place to mount the V1 remote display unit -- right now I have it right between the speedo and the tach on the steering column -- but it's stuck on with Velcro. When it gets hot, the adhesive gets gooey and the thing tips backwards.

Does anybody have a more permanent mounting solution? I was toying with mounting it in place of the clock on the dash, has anybody done this? pics, howtos?

Thanks!

I have my escort 8500 mounted and hardwired on top of my rear view mirror according to the instructions on the link below. Works just fine and not visible from the outside.

Having seen both and using both in person, the V1 is definately a better built and well, a better all around detector. Whether or not it's worth the extra money is up to ones own mind. The X50 is definately a very nice detector. It's thicker and longer than the V1 and it gets extremely hot after long use. The V1 always stays pretty cool.

thx for the info, i know the v1 is easily the best, just rather buy some performance parts you know ;p i've been stalling, i've wanted one for a while now, maybe i'll somehow make myself buy the v1, because i just need the best

I wouldn't exactly say easily the best. It's detection range is on par with the V1 with K and Ka bands on the straight away. Where the V1 excels is in detection over hills and around corners. A coworker of mine ordered the X50 and I got the V1. We drove around an area near work that is just loaded with cops to test both out. We did it with both on at the same time and then 1 at a time to rule out problems with both units interfering with each others detection range. Obviously this isn't a precise test, but the V1 did excel around corners, hills and definately from behind. We had a cop coming up from behind us on a very hilly street. The V1 picked up the rear radar well before his X50 did. Although this sounds fine and dandy, I have to say that in the few radar points we ran across, both detectors provided more than enough time to react, with exception of the cop coming from behind. Just for giggles, we tested his 8 year old Bel. I can't remember which model. It amazes me how far they have advanced in detection over the years.

I had a V1 but got rid of it. I personally thought it was a little too big for my taste. I switched to the Bel built in remote radar...had a 615StiR and then upgraded to a 975R with dual laser. It works great...It picks up radar just as good as the V1 IMO, plus its more hidden. The only thing that sucks is that most police are switching to Impulse radar which means if you get hit, your radar isn't going to let you know anytime in advance..Its just going to let you know you got hit and its time took look for your license and registration...LOL...Impulse radar = Laser...NO WARNING!!!!
