Maxima Dieing At Idle

My 2K max is dieing at idle. It doesn't happen all the time, mostly after I drive on the freeway for 30 minutes or longer. As soon as I pull into a parking lot and place the auto in park it will die. Usually the rpm will slowly vary from 500 to 700 very smoothy and then die just like the key was turned off. Strange thing is, if I sit in the parking lot with it in drive, it stays running.

A week after this started the ses light came on and I got the P0140. A few days ago I replaced Bank 1 Sensor 2 and cleared the ecm, but it is still dieing. The light has not came on again, yet. I believe it will after a few more start and stops.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for your help, I originaly post this question thinking it was a ks sensor.

How many miles are on the car? Have you done any mods? Is there anything else you notice about how it runs?

72K on the clock, completely stock. I have done regular oil changes and air filter changes. Original plugs and everything, except 1 new o2 sensor. It does have Cali emmisions.

The car seems to run and start fine. Sometimes after it dies, if you try to immediately start it again, it starts up and then instantly dies unless you depress the gas pedal for a few seconds.

I would start with the plugs and have the fuel system cleaned including the throttle body. Sounds like heavy carbon build up to me.

When you say clean the fuel system, do you mean running injecter cleaner in the fuel tank or something else?

Also, how do you quote a previous post in a reply?

What I mean is click this link type in your zip, check within 10 miles and find a shop that does Fuel/Air Induction Service take the car there and get it done.

DO NOT use any of the crap you can buy at a parts store. Do it right the 1st time. You will be very happy with the results.

Thanks for your help, I'll try the fuel system cleaning and plugs this week end and let the forum know the results.

That's why I told him to start with things that need to be done as normal maintenance to see if it fixes the problem. If not then on to the coils. I bet there's a lot of carbon build up in the TB, IM and valves...

Well, I changed the plugs and checked all the coils with a ohm meter last night. Coils seem to be alright, I check them when they were hot and the car was acting up. I've read the ohm test is not 100% accurate.

The plugs looked very clean, nice tan insulator, but worn electrode and too large of a gap .055+.

The car is still sick. It seems to be getting worse every day, this might be a good thing. Aiding in diagnosing the problem.

I plan on having the intake system cleaned tomorrow and then as a last resort drop it off at the dealer.

Thanks for everyones replies. I will post the outcome if anyones interested.

Not just intake system cleaning but a Full fuel system cleaning is what you need.

Also I would have waited to change the plugs till after the cleaning as alot of crap is going to go through the cylinders. See how it runs after the cleaning and take it from there.

I should have said something about that, my bad, sorry...

If the engine quits smoothly as if the key was turned off it's usually an ignition problem -- possible neutral safety switch issue or some other electrical (antitheft?) Maybe check the coils as above but that seems unlikely as well!

Very rarely would a dirty throttle body/injectors cause your engine to stall like that.

Maxima is fixed!

I had the fuel system cleaned, I am sure it needed it, but did not notice a difference in performace. So, I dropped it off at Nissan Monday. It turned out to be a MAF sensor that was causing all the problems. I think it had been degrading over time or maybe it was all the tune up stuff, but it runs so much better now. More power through out the RPM range.

For my 300.00 dollar trip to the dealer, I got a new MAF and ECU reprogram. Three of the air box bolts left loose (one of them partially stripped) and the clamp on the new MAF left undone. I was ****ed, I paid 130 bucks labor for ****ed up workmanship. Tuesday I called back and complained, they offered me a free oil change, woo hoo, Like I will give them a chance to leave the oil filter loose.

I guess what matters is the car is fixed and running great!

Thanks so much for everyones help.

Dont know how rare or common it is but my car was stalling out when coming to a stop all the time. After I cleaned my TB (few months ago) it hasn't stalled once since.
