Cut the 6 Speed Shifter, 1 Inch Lower Now

Well, I was completly bored today and brought my Maxima to a friends shop. I originally went there for a gauge face replacement but also got talked into cutting the Stock 6 Speeds Shifter. Well it turned out better then I thought. We cut about an inch off of the shifter and redid the plastic reverse piece. We cut that off and epoxied it back together dropping the shift **** about 1 inch. We then re threaded the shifter shaft. So it now sits down about an inch or so lower the the Nissan one. It wasn't that hard to do and well I know its not a short shifter , its still shorter then that huge one nissan gives you. I took it for a ride and well I really enjoyed having to actually shift. The shifts were a little smoother and believe it or not, shorter.

I once cut 2 inches off my friends 95 max, it looked good but felt nothing like a short shifter.

One inch sounds more reasonable, if you have please post some pictures, i was thinking of circumcising my 6 speed but it seemed to much work for minimal results.

Looks nice! What did you have to do to the plastic reverse gear actuator?

The reason why the shifter is set so high is an ergonomics issue. Any and all cars designed to be driven hard have the shifter situated close to the wheel. This allows for faster switching between the wheel and shifter. A short throw kit is what the car needs, now someone go make it.

Cutting

I cut the Plastic right where it has the metal pin that allows it to slide up and down so you can put it in reverse. I then took it off and cut and inch of the plastic and shifter. I then cut a new slot into the plastic for the metal pin so it can once again slide up and down for the reverse. I epoxied the plastic together. I put the plastic reverse piece back on and then put the metal pin in. You will have to buy a rubber grommet for the plastic piece becase there is a spring in there that makes it go back down after you have used reverse. So get a rubber grommet and put it in, along with the stock spring and then the gear shift **** and your done.
