Fuel Door & Service Light

Someone must have bumped into my dad's fuel door (2001 SE), and it wouldn't shut. This triggered the "service engine soon" to go on...steady light, no blinking. I fixed the door for him so it shuts now and opens with the button. By fixing I mean i bent it crazy , but it looks fine. The light, though wont turn off. I unplugged the battery for like a half out to try and reset the comp, but it still stayed on. The manual says a steady light means it has to do with the fuel door. I know it could mean something else is wrong, but I'm positive it just wont shut off. We're trading in the car in a month and I'm tempted to just disconnect the light bulb unless i can get it to shut off properly. Any suggestions?

im sorry if this seems like a newb question. i have a 3rd gen and little knowledge of 5th gens. thanx!
