What would you pay for this 2003 SE?

I went to a $tealer today and looked at a 2003 Black SE

Automatic
Black Leather
Bose
Sunroof
Pretty much everything but the Navigation

The car had 28,850 miles on it.

They said they wanted $22,200

I said they got it on a trade in for $15,000

they said maybe around $21,000

I said maybe I would pay $20,000, maybe

Then he showed me the door

Am I wrong here?

22200 definitely a ripoff. 20 grand is even high. I would offer 18000

Walk. That's way too high. IMO. I would do it for 18.

I knew it! I told the guy that and he said I didn't know what I was talking about

Then he got on the phone and called some guy who "told" him that 2001 base models were going for 15,800 at the auctions

I told the guy I had been pricing them for 2 months and I am fully aware that they are going for under 19,000...but he didn't listen.

I wonder if I'll get a call from the manager...i left him a message

Common dealer tactic. If you have a trade, he'll also say that one of his customers is looking for that exact same car or the wholesalers are only here today buying trade ins. All BS.

I totally called him out on it too. I flat out told him I thought he was lying, since 2001's are only worth 15k retail.

F this dealer, I'm buying privately

My fully loaded 2001 SE is at 30k right now. It's worth $16k. That 03' at less than 30k should be worth around $20-21k.

Dealers in chicago are selling new 2004 maximas for $24.5k, sure it is not leather. I would say $17-19K at most for the one you mentioned.
Frankly i would buy a 2005 Altima as it is lighter than an 04 max and has a better rear suspension than an 03 max. Plus you may get 1.9-2.9 financing.
Still an 03 for $17 or so would be great. Take your time, you will get the right car.
Run a carfax on anything used that you are considering.

dealers make more money on used cars than new.

Over 20k is way too much. $18k sounds resonable.

19K is about right since it has the leather and Bose.

I would say no more than 17K. The guy actually told you they paid 15K for it-that's very unusuall in my experience. I think a quick $2000 profit is more than fair.

he wouldn't say how much he had it for. I told him I know for a fact that they DONT pay 15,000+ at the auctions for base model 01's.

the one you talk about is an automatic of course..

but some guy in the local paper (KC Star) is selling a 6 speed just like mine (excpet exterior color is silver, not black) and is asking $22,500

I called him to see what options he had, and it turns out it's identical, he has less miles (28,000 vs. my 32,700)

He claims our car will go for $19,000 at auction, all day, no problem.

To back that up, I was trying to buy a Titan about 2 months ago, and the dealer was giving me the Titan at $500 over invoice, and offering me $18,700 for my 6 speed Maxima.

Now I hear 6 speeds are worth less than automatics. (I say 6 speeds are rarer, and shoud pull more, but what do I know?)

anyway, the 5.5 Gen Maxima is probably going to hold it's value pretty well. I'd say by the time 2008 rolls around, 2002 and 2003 Maxima's will be worth just as much as 2004 Maximas.

6th Gen Maxima's suck. If someone wants a new Maxima, they feel the better car is the used 5.5 Gen. They don't want a 6th Gen, not even a used one. (unless they are just looking for a bargain)

No, I haven't sold my Maxima yet, but I keep getting calls on it. I need to try and sell it in the local paper.

this is what you do if you want the car that bad. wait until the end of the month. this way they are needing to sell what they have in a hurry. next do not go in until right before the dealership closes. this is b/c you are going in on their time. they will be in a rush home and less motivated to sell at a ridiculous cost. hopefully this will get the price down from what what they are asking. be firm and have patience. you will find a max for what you want to pay!!!

I would've shown him the finger .. of course after he turned around

My friend bought a 2k2 (27,500 miles) with exact options in VA. It was 04/2002. He paid 17,500. So you'll be the judge.

I bought my Brand New Black 03 Auto SE last April in Chicago for $24,950 (~21000 miles on it now). Fully loaded leather titanium edition with everything but navi, it even has a pinstripe. If I could get someone to pay $19000 for it I would probably sell it. I want a Manual 05 Altima SE.

I got my '02 se for $15550, so what that guy was saying is obviously crap. Although mine doesn't have a sunroof or leather, it has lojack and wood trim- 32k miles. I think I got a steal, but there is no was that '03 is going to be more than $19k.

This is why dealerships are generally a waste of time. A non-nissan dealership may let go of it easier, or you can find a used car lot, but a nissan dealership will always in my experience charge more than the car is truly worth. If you go private you'll get it cheaper, but I've found that good used car lots will sell similar to private prices, and a good used car lot won't try and ask for more than high teens for that car.

A _year and a half ago_ I found an immaculate 02 max fully loaded with 10,500 miles for $20,500 on a used car lot. The car you want is comparitively older, given that it's only a year newer than the 02 I'm talking about and it has quite a few more miles.

Regardless of what that dealer tells you, if you pay more than high teens for it you're getting ripped off. Personally I wouldn't get randy over it until it was around 18k and then I'd start to look more in depth at options and local pricse on autotrader, etc. $22,200 is fantasy land. You can get a brand new 04 for what like $5k more than that? And Nissans have pathetic resale. He's trying to sell fully a generation-old vehicle with a good bit of miles on it.

I bought mine at auction last June for $17.
No leather, nav or 6 speed.
As a rule leather adds about $1K to a new car, same for navigation and a 6 spd costs less than an auto.
I'd say $18K would be an auction price if the sucker was really clean. The dealer is than going to want to make 25-30% profit so $22K is about right.

Why not hook up with a local auto broker and go buy at the auction. The guy I use here in Denver charges $1K over whatever you get the car for.
