I am intent on installing a DVD-based aftermarket GPS navigation system in my 2K Max. GLE. Has anyone out there done this? If so, which brands are more desireable and how has your navigation system performed? I have checked many posts on epinions.com and it appears that the Alpine and Pioneer systems are most liked. I did read one post on this forum from a gent who put an aftermarket Alpine nav system in his I-30. However, I am interested in Maxima-specific applications. Thanks in advance for the advice.

Todd in San Diego-2k Maxima GLE w/Falken ZE-502 V-rated tires, Philips D2R real HID, PIAA 85 watt H3 Superwhite fogs.

What do you mean Maxima-specific installs? I've done three nav systems in mine, but mine's an i30, so..

i got one in mine. the alpine dvd based navi system. it works real well. i have almost nothing bad to say about it. one bad thing i can think about it, as well as almost all other consumer navigation systems, is that there is a 250 square feet area code (something like that) so sometimes your curser moves off of the path and the computer tries and puts it on the rite spot. it rarely happens to me tho.. i've done extensive research on navigation systems prior to my purchase of the one i have now. Imo it's the best one available in north america for now.

Features on the Alpine DVD are ok, but detail sucks unless you're in a major city. If you're not in a major city, i'd try to go the PC route if you're ambitious..

I was looking at a site for the European Maxima today, and a factory navigation system is an option. It fits in the panel right above the clock. If someone really wants an OEM look, you might try importing it.

Thanks for all of your responses!

By "Maxima-specific" I mean that the pop-up navigation command screen common to Alpine systems would have to be integrated into the dash. I am wary of bolt-on, aftermarket setups which would be tantalizing for thieves.

Tonight I went to Tweeter/Dow stereo and demoed the Alpine system. It was very nice-$4000 nice! This is a bit steep and I would be more inclined to go with the cheaper but equally functional Magellen Nav950 (only $2000). Thanks again for the feedback.

the pioneer system is not a dvd based navi system so any time you go to a different part of the country you will have to switch cds...the alpine is supposed to be very good...it should be $2k, not 4...the screen is $1300 and the navigation is $2000...you will most likely get a deal if you buy both at once...figure 200 off...so probably figure around 3500-4000 installed w/ an alpine 12 disc in the trunk...navi is expensive...i have the alpine screen, but just my ps2 hooked up (for dvds)...navi was too expensive for me
