Brakes...PLEASE HELP!!!!

I changed my brakes about 2 months ago. I went with brembo slotted rotors and axxis ultimate pads. I had a hard time with the rears but finally got it to work. BUt ever since on the drivers side rear brake system when I hit the brake there is a awful screeching sound coming from it. And the sound continues even when the brake is not applied when idling speed. The only tims it goes away is when I go over 20mph. I have taken the wheel off a few times to see if it was just the pad rubbing the rotor which I thought it was, but I figured that it would have worn down by now. I'm not sure if there is something wrong with the caliper. Anyone ever had this happen, and know how to fix it? Any help is appreciated!

I would get some anti squeel and spray the back of the pads and re-install them. My Brembo Blanks squeeled a little after installing them during the break in period, but now I have no problems. I didn't spray the front pads when I did them and they still squeel a little....need to pull them apart and spray them too.... I would also check the free play of the rotor when the wheel is off. If its hard to turn the rotor when the wheel is off then the caliper piston needs might be too tight.

No, everything seems to be fine with what you have suggested, anyone else have any opinion on this?

did you screw in the piston, or did you clamp it? sounds like the caliper is not dis-engaging..

I screwed it in while pushing hard on it. At first I tried to clamp it but then realized I had to screw it in. Could I have damaged the caliper? If so how much is this going to set me back at the stealer?

Your description is making this difficult to diagnose but I understand that these kinds of things are hard to describe. Your description of "awful screeching sound" sounds much worse than what people would normally consider brake pad squeal. Especially since the sound continues after you have released the brake.

Your statement of having trouble with the rears could either be a red herring or an indication of why you are having a problem. My experience with replacing rear rotors is that they are pretty simple to replace and any mistake would likely render the car undriveable. At a minimum you'd likely get smoking from the rear wheels.

One difference between fronts and rears is the parking brake. Did you check that the parking break cable mechanism isn't binding? Verify that your parking brake is working. If you can't slow/stop your car with your parking brake then you have another, albeit related, problem.

Next I would focus on the pads. Do they show any sign of wear? More importantly do the rears show the same signs of wear (probably tough to do without actually measuring the pad thickness on both sides). You could try reseating the axxis pads or putting in your previous pads, assuming that there is some pad left. My own experience with Axxis metal masters was they squealed a lot (in comparison to factory originals or the Hawk HP+ pads that I normally use).

The next logical thing is to go back to your previous rotors and pads. I wouldn't change the fronts as they seem to be fine for you. If everything seems fine, the you might want to take the rear rotors to a parts shop and see if they are out of round.

Other than these things I can't think of anything else. Hope this helps. Good luck with your problem.

It sounds like the same problem I have been having. After I drive for a little while my rear right rim was red hot and the other was just a little warm. It turned out that the caliper was not letting lose all the way after pressing my brakes.

Have you fixed this yet? And what was the actual problem, did the aliper need to be replaced? I am bringing in the car tuesday morning to have it looked at, just dont want to drop a lot of money into it. Its under warranty but since I changed to aftermarket rotors and pads I'm sure they wont cover it.

Ok just got back from the dealer. It was just some hardware installed improperly so they say. Was 30 bucks to fix it. Oh well, it's not doing it anymore (for now).
