Goodbye Maxima?

I don't know if this has been discussed before, if so I missed but I was just thinking about something. The 05' Max is pretty much the same as the 04' no surprise there. But I'm just curious about what is going to happen to the Max in the future.

The Altima is pretty much the same car and costs about $5,000 less, so who would want a Max. I know it is a MAXIMA but unless they do something drastic (Big HP upgrade, AWD) I'm afraid we might lose it. I'm just curious what you guys think?

As of right now, if I were to get a new Nissan, I would pick the new Altima. The looks are much better than the '04 Max. I love my Max, it's hard to say that I would actually get an Altima. Nissan needs to do something.

yeah it's been discussed....the biggest rumor is that they're gonna axe the Maxima since the Altima has taken its place in the lineup (i.e. 4door sports car) and the Alti is actually as big and powerful as the maxima...not to mention the 6th gens are so UGLY!

and then if they upgrade the maxima any more (luxury, power, AWD) then it'll be something that Nissan already HAS - and Infiniti...

My 2cents is just go ahead and axe it. I love my maxima, but the maxima is just turning into a big, ugly boat, and the great maxima engine can be gotten in an Altima...

don't know what the 04 maxima sales numbers are, but they can't be good (well, if you take away the TONS of maximas that are being sold to rental car agencies...) That's another thing - who's gonna want to spend $30K on a car that is sitting at every Hertz and Avis - might as well just buy a Taurus

They should've just let it die after the 5th gen....

I would probably go to buyn BMWs and Audis now that Nissan is less and less performance oriented. 350Z is a joke in my eyes.

It's true. When the '02 Alti came out, its wheelbase was 2 inches longer and it was almost an inch longer than the '02 Max. The 6-cyl. weighed as much as the Max. It made me wonder which of the two was the bigger car. And the 3.5L available Alti almost sealed the deal for anyone, for $30k+ everyone will get an Infiniti instead of a Maxima.

and the Alti SE-R is really the final straw to knock the maxima off the "4SC" podium....

Yepp, i know if i had to choose between the 05 alti or max i would choose alti. The 3.5 v6 altima is faster than a maxima stock, what the **** kind of bull **** is that. Yeah let me pay lik 5 grand more for nothing more than an auto up and down passenger window. My next car = lexus or bmw. Nissan is just ****ing me off lately. They ruined the maxima completely. The g35 is prob the only car i would buy in the line up of a nissan for a long time. Watch them F that up too though

Maxima Future?

The 5th generation Maxima is about as large as I would want to see it, and what others have said I think is true that the Maxima doesn't seem to fill in a position in the Nissan/Infiniti line up.

If I was dreaming maybe a Maxima with:

300 hp no forced induction
all wheel drive on a solid platform tuned to be a 4DSC
trimmed up a bit as I think it is getting big for a 4DSC, closer to 3000 lbs
leather/sunroof? don't care, but it could be an option
6 speed or a manumatic with paddles on the wheel? Probably too far for most.

Hmmm...I wonder what could be done with the Infiniti G35x? The Maxima might have run its course, but it has been a long run and was one of the few bright points during Nissan's troubled years and the VQ engine lives on.

The only way to make the maxima even worth considering over the altima would be an AWD platform..... which is what i think nissan will do

i doubt they will axe their flagship model

which awd will be awesome and make altima owners be very sad

i know i wish my car was awd

A great way to distinguish the max would be to put the Q's 4.5 V8 in it and make it available with a 6sp manual. Having the same v6 in the altima, 350Z, and G35 doesn't hurt sales of any and putting the V8 in the max won't impede on the sales of the Q45 and M45 which suck anyway.

And what would the price tag of a V8 Maxima be? Let's not forget that 5-genners were going for 25-27k. In any case, the idea sounds sweet and even if the price fell out of range, it would be well worth it compared to the $30k+ for a 6 genner now.

I talked to a friend who does the advertising campaign in Mexico and he showed me some Maxima coupe concept. Nothing yet though about an AWD.

Since Nissan was able to get the outstanding VQ35 into cars in the very low 20K range, I'm sure the 4.5V8 could be had for somewhere around thirty. The sticker might not say it, but the true market value would eventually settle near there. My 03 was 22K brand new. I think a future max with a v8 could eventually go for 30 or less once the market settles.

This might be an awkward comparison, but the titan xe with 5.6 liter v8 goes for around 25K brand new so i doubt the cost difference in mass-producing a v8 vs. a v6, especially in a popular car like the maxima would cost many thousands more per car.
