When does the timing belt need replaced?

I have a 2k w/54k on it. Does the timing belt need to be replaced at a certain time? If so, when should I get it changed? And does anyone know about how much it should cost?

Thank you in advance.

Don't replace it unless it is making noise.

They do strech a little over the years, but they usually make noise before they fail.

The only belts you need to change would be you drive belts which run your power steering, brakes, A/C alternator, etc. Change them when they start squealing on cold starts.
Other than that they have a Timing Chain which almost never needs changing.

Isn't there a tensioner that takes care of the stretching?

An automatic hydraulic tensioner I believe.

Pyroil Belt Dressing should help

Couple of months ago I started to hear squeals from the PS pump and I grabbed the belts to see if they were loose. It wasn't so I guessed it should not be replaced so I sprayed Pyroil Belt Dressing on the PS and Alternator belts (keep the engine running and spay at the points where the belt stretches over the pulley).

This should enhance the belts stretching abitity and keep it from spinning off the pulleys and offcourse give it another 20-30K.

The screetching from the PS pump has stopped on cold starts.

Enjoy

It used to be that you replaced your timing "BELT" every 75K along with the water pump (now done twice on the ol 91 but with the new ones the belt has been replaced with a chain which does not require replacement.

Not on the VQ30DE! (I think the 3.5 is the same but am not sure) you have to adjust the tension with a screw. The manual has a different setting for new and used belts that should take care of normal streching.

If it is to loose or tight, adjust it to stop squealing.

EDIT: yep this got confusing, I was talking about the drive belts not the timing chain.

The thread is timing belt (actually a chain) and I am nearly positive it has a hydraulic tensioner.

If you guys want to talk about the power steering or alternator belts (no timing factor to those by the way) thats fine. But to not realize that one is not the other is making this thread a cluster f____.

I was answering 6sp's question about the timing chain stretching.

The 3.5L has a tensioner on the timing chain(s) (1 primary and 2 secondary chains). I can't see anythink refering to its adjusting itself (hydraulic or otherwise) anyone know for sure?

Good info thread, even if it is really 2 threads.

HaHa! it is a good thread as long as you are in step with the flip flop back and forth on the subject matter.

Some people have complained about a noise on initial start up and they have been told not to worry, it is a timing chain rattle that goes away in an instant once the tensioner pumps up. My bMW cycle is chain cam drive, it has a hydraulic tensioner also.

this thread should have ended after the 3rd, 4th, or 5th posts....

so I'll add one more, since everyone else is.

"it's a chain
you don't need to replace it."
