Money Trap: Is your Maxima the car you want?

I would love to save half of my pay checks and continuously mod my car to make it be and look as cool as many of yours but considering I've already put around $400 into the car (I know that isn't that much) I really don't feel like spending too much money on it. At this point in my life I'm not making much money and I'd rather just save it up my money for a replacement for my Maxima years down the road. Don't get me wrong, I love the car. I just feel that if I'm going to put over $1000 into a car it should at least be have power to the rear wheels if not all four.

I like my car a lot and I will keep it for a while, but I just don't see the sense in myself, personally, spending money on a car that I will end up trading in in the future.

Just ranting, what do you think?

I think you're stuck in the mindset that you are comparing your ride to the guy next to yours. I've spent $200 on stuff to 'mod' my car but I'm not going to do anything to either change the handling or powertrain of my car, because in my opinion, it's fine. I just want to tweak the appearance (clear corners) and comfort (every wind noise fix I can find) to make it a car I can live with for 5 or six years. If you want to see a money pit, look at the lambo doors thread, otherwise mod until you're happy, not until you impress somebody.

Yeah, the Maxima is the car I want. Every car has it' problems, but so far ther have been few. I knew when I bought it that it was front wheel drive. I also knew that at the time, it was a good power to looks to cost purchase for me. There will always be a 'better' car out there. Research and find what you are really looking for, and get that one. For me, I will always want to 'personalize' my car according to my tastes no matter what car it is. Even if you save up your money and buy another car, you will eventually want something different and trade for it. I love my Max and plan to keep it for many years (and it's paid for) ... Just ranting lol

That's the good thing about the newer maximas. They already have the nice 3.5 engine and come with 17/18" wheels. It's already faster and has bigger wheels than most modded 3/4/some 5 gen maximas.

For me, I've never been seriously bitten by the mod bug, but I have added things to my Maxima. I've always regretted not getting the 20th Anniversary Edition after I got my '01 SE, so I've spent some money adding some of the AE parts to my car. I've also gotten a FSTB and RSB to improve the stock ride. But I really don't spend too much more even though I would love to because I do have other priorities in life, namely my lady, our kids, our house, and all the bills that come along with that.

Car stuff usually isn't cheap, but family stuff is more important and even more expensive, so I know where my money has to go. Car modding is fun, but usually better suited for either a younger person who can devote more disposable income into it or a more established person who has extra disposable income to put into it. If you're in the middle, like me, there is no way I could justify spending many thousands on a continually dollar-value-depreciating item when you know it can be spent better doing something else.

I love my Maxima and I take great care of her, and she treats me good. I plan on keeping her for many more years as she is today, and not too much more.

That's my 2-cents. Peace.

well...for a college guy like me...i' like to mod for hobbit also to impress someone ( i don't have girl yet ) but tell you the truth, maxima is a cool car, but not a car i really want. a college guy doesn't need a big family sedan, i need a car like WRX at this moment. For future, I'd like to have a Audi RS6 or a S4. they are still sedan, but they are really fast and they can also take care of my lady and my kids( if i have a lady..duh..) So, someone would ask, why don't you buy a WRX? answer is i don't have money..my 2k max only costs me 9.3 grands 2 months ago... i love my max thou, i'm trying to put some money on it and mod it. this is my first car, I need to learn basic stuff about cars. i would probably put a turbo or supercharger on my max when my knowledge is good enough and my pocket is fat enough. money is a smaller issue for me coz i still live with my parents and i also have my own job. just don't want to put on car when my brain needs more knowledge at cars.....sigh..

There is no problem with your view point ABD I've not really done anything to either of my Maximas and the're booth cool cars .... then again it all depends on who you're trying to please: yourself or other people.

There is nothing wrong with putting money away for several years and saving for the new vehicle that you will eventually want. I do the same thing. That's why I always pay cash for my cars and never have a payment over my head. But then again I don't buy cars all that often.

My maxima is exactly the car I want. With some left over stereo parts from my old car and $900, my audio system is nearly perfect and I could care less about making it go any faster or any handle better because it already has all that I need. The only thing I would add are hid's.

well i put 10k into my engine on my civic, after i spent 5k doing engine transplant

then it got stolen

i figured i dont want a car that is gonna get stolen
and i dont need to go 12.3 in the 1/4 anymore, im too old for that

so i picked up my maxima, spent almost 2 grand on making it enjoyable, and im good to go

i figure ill have the car for 5-6 years, then buy a skyline back from its lease

It is a car i am happy with and not rushing to change.

I don't pour money in it so i don't feel compelled in any way, nor will have regret later on when i sell it.

And by that i mean i've only 'wasted' a mere $2500....

i love my max. it is my first car (yes i am 17) and i love it. it is everything i want in a first car. i mean some people have cars that dont even match the maxima like civics. and all those people be doing engine swap to make them fast. well i am glad i got a maxima and i plan on keeping it forever. yes forever because no way would i sell my max after all the hard work i done to it. and i will keep modding it. plus it will be the only one in the world with a vq35 6 speed unless somebody is crazy as my bro and i to attempt this. i cant wait to brag on my friends with their civics and integras wih swapped engines. nissan forever. nothing in this price range you can buy that will give you as much as a maxima.
so keep modding and dont worry about it. just as long as it will make u happy.

In high school I wanted an Integra, but my parents couldn't afford it for me, so in college I bought it for myself. After college I bought a 4th gen SE Maxima because I have always loved the timeless styling of the Maxima. I have spent some $ on it and I like it. I am a school teacher and I love to drive up to school in a cool car that isn't your run of the mill Accord or Camry. They are nice, but boring. I love my Maxima and will probably trade it in a couple of years for a Pathfinder with the third seat, but for now, it is fits my lifestyle. That is the basic premise of a car, you have it as long as it fits your needs, then you trade for the new car that will fit you until you trade again... Before you know it you are 100 and arthritic and have to have a Town Car with air suspension. Enjoy it while you can.

i've got almost a thousand in my stereo, i had to replace my piaa headlights. I'm buying a frakencar intake for 25 bucks next week along with a slightly used tire. Thats all the money i have in it other than oil changes and stuff like that. I figure by the time I sell it i'll prolly have between 1500-2000 in it.

P.S. the guy who had it before me put H&R springs on it.

First of all, do things to the car because YOU want to. Don't feel like you have to "modify " your car because you are a member of an online car club.
I may have about $1500 in "mods" on my MAX; but then again after signing on the dotted line in the fall of 2002 for $28K to purchase it's my plan to pay this sucker off and keep it for 200K miles mods and all. Everyone has they're own tastes and preferences, I've done a combination of appearance/performance mods and certainly will do more in the future. The car has been exceptional so far, well worth the investment. Kelly (blue book) may say shes losing value but to me she only gettin better!

I didn't really get my car by choice, my dad chose the car and bought it from a salvage yard after i totaled my celica(god i loved that car ). I liked the max but i didn't think it was a car i could really mod like my old car. After a while i decided to put some wheels on it and it all went downhill after that. Now the mods are:

19" axis wheels
Stillen touring kit
Stillen SC
Toser fully adjustable coilovers
Blehmco BBK (soon to be insalled)
AE headlights
Warpspeed y pipe, b pipe, straight pipe
Maximum tunning vb
Apexi SAFC 2
Custom stereo
Various lights blah blah blah

Its kinda of funny how one can change their mind about a car

It wasnt my first choice (00-02 TA was what I wanted) , but now that I have it I realize it is much more useful and practical for someone of my age and finanacial situation. It will be a quick and great beater for 8-12 years and my adrenaline rush will be a C6 Vette when I can afford it. I wont be going beyond NA mods and probably wont put any more than another $2k in mods into it.

i wish i could set a price range for how much more money i will spend on my max but modding is addicting.

clear corners-$30
H&R springs-$227
stillen 5 piece bodykit-$550
OEM Spolier-$100
Paint job for the whole car-$800
vq35 engine with 6 speed-$1700
and more. the list just never stops. my car is a money pit but i am keeping it and never selling it.

so dont worry
keep modding and enjoy

After $5000 and not a whole lot to show for it, I've decided that I need to move on. The last two years with the Maxima have been great, but I found myself always wanting more. More power, better handling, and more modding potential.

After some hard thinking, I decide to put my Maxima up for sale. All mods were removed and sold over the last few months. It was put in Autotrader a little over two weeks ago. A buyer was found and the payoff was sent out today. I will have to turn it over to the new owner next week. Yes, I will definitely miss it. However, I believe that it was the right decision for me.

maxima is a car that if u take care of it well it would last you at least 10 years.. and since i'm still in college and do not plan to buy any more cars untill i graduate and even some years after.. i would rather costimize it a little and i do it as a Hobby.. unlike others who spend everything they have on the car..

my friend has a celica.. and that foo does not eat just to save up money to get **** for his car

I was never too much into Maximas, although I always thought it was a car with character. But I had never imagined I would ever have one myself. Never wanted one. Got mine by accident and fell in love with it. Planning on keeping it for a couple of years and then going G...

If I had my druthers, I would go for an Audi RS6, AMG E55 or Porsche 996 but since I cant, I wont.

One idea I've been tinkering with is buying a 97-98 BMW 528 five-speed with many miles on the engine (which you can get here and there for under $15k) and pulling the tired, 193 hp 2.8 liter six and replacing it with the 3.2 liter six as used on the 95-98 M3s. Stock it's at 240hp, with a few mods (intake, cams, headers, ECU and exhaust) those engines can be taken to ~280hp and with 300 lbs less pounds to carry around than the 540s of the same body type (E39), such a car be way too much fun...

All that said, I'm saving my pennies for Sundays so my Max, with
a) only 25,444 miles on it, and it turns three years old in three weeks and
b) about $4k worth of mods (including tires & wheels) is it for a loooooong time

i initially wanted a lexus es or sc, but after looking around and seeing all the engines having sludge problems and also selling for thousands more than a nissan, i wound up buying an infiniti...

i've never regret it at all.
