High mileage maxima
Well i bought a new home and its 104 highway miles round trip to my work, should i put this kinda mileage on my max or should i buy a beater and use that for work?
If I should buy a beater, what are some reliable four bangers to buy, i'm thinking foreign for sure.
thanks by the way, i'm not a newbie, I had to get a new screen name.

I disagree with Lontar. What's the point of having a car you enjoy driving if you're only gonna drive it on the weekends?
Conversely, why would you want to drive 100 miles a day in a car that's not enjoyable to drive (i.e. 4-banger beater).
My vote - drive the hell out of your maxima, and enjoy every second of it.....if it someday dies, buy a new car!
Another point - the maxima is a very safe car....I have a buddy who's totaled 2 of them (not his fault) and wasn't hurt AT ALL either time.....If you're putting in alot of road time, do it in a safe car......yeah you could get a little civic or something - nothin wrong with an econo-car - but it won't be as safe, won't be as fun.....
BTW, I put 60 miles per day on my commute and over 100 per day when I work my evening job during the winter........Besides, by the time your maxima dies from high mileage, there will be some new car out you want anyways....
It's not like your maxima is a classic ferrari or something that you need to "save"...it's a nice performace sedan that will never be "rare" or "classic" or "antique" (though that's probably heresy to say here!)....4-5 years down the road you (and everyone else here) will have moved on to the next/better car out there....

By the tme you are done with your maxima 5 to 6 years down the road, your maxima won't be worth much due to depreciation anyway. Might as well enjoy your commute. If you can live with the mileage it will give you, you might as well stick with it because it's one of the best highway commuters out there. I retired my 85 at 255K and traded in my 98 with 161K, and can't complain about either of them. Don't worry about it, just don't buy new, that's my only advice. Let someone else take the initial depreciation hit. Run it into the ground...

Dude thats nothing. I have 62,035 miles on my maxima in 14 months and 1 day.
What is the point of buying a car if you don't drive it??? And you know that this car will take the mileage as it is highly reliable...especially the 3.5.
The only thing you might want to do is get another car that gets better gas mileage with the high prices.

i agree with irish. ppl at my work have beaters they drive. one of em owns a 300 benz. he drives that only on fridays, cause he goes clubbin after work. the rest of days he drives a beat-up geo tracker. i always say to him that there is no point in owning a nice car, if you can't enjoy it fully. he just cries about the depreciation...

I drive 128 miles round trip 5 days a week and love every minute of it. The way I look at it is we all have Maximas because we love them, why not drive the hell out of them. I've put 22,000 miles on mine in the past year and don't regret it one bit. Drive on, you'll love it.

i drive 95 miles a day round trip. 5 days a week. Not to mention other places i go during weekdays and weekends. I drive a 2000. This is my only transportation so no choice. But whats the point of having a maxima when your not going to be really using it. I SAY USE IT TO THE MAX! You only live once. Comfort = numero uno for me.

Oh man.. i'm the opposite. My '02 only has 11K on it. hehe And I bought a '97 Explorer last year to drive around in the winter. Can't let my poor Max get torn up by the nasty salt when it starts snowing.

I'd disagree with all (except couple of folks here) and go with a beater. I'll get one eventually anyway. Yes, you will enjoy your commute to/from work more than in a beater, but having 100K+ miles in a 2-year old car won't make you happy. My opinion of course

I am not going to pay for a car that is just sinking the foundation in my garage... I say drive the Max, plus you never know when the boss may lunch with you and you don't want to cart them around in a Civic, do you? I always equate my success with the ability to enjoy my Max. It's not a 750iL, but it's my success. Drive the Maxima. I also agree that if you get in a wreck in a Civic you are so gone, but in the Max you are much better protected.

Just driver it and if you really wan't another car. get a sports car. My 2k SE has almost 100k. I driver 70 miles a day with my 2 year old. If you can't enjoy the car and don't feel save, what's the point. I will eventually get another car. I think Audi S3 when it becomes available. But I'll lease it and still keep the Max. I got my Max new and I'll be the one who kills it.

I had a beater 2001 civic ex coupe, i drive 80 miles per day, i put 49K miles in 13 Months , i bought the civic with 14k miles on it.. now i drive my max back and forth and i plan on putting 200k miles on the max.. take care of it, drive it , maintain and enjoy it.. and most of all increase ur tire pressure to 33 cold psi or higher ur gas mileage will improve..

drive the s.hit out of your maxima. its highway miles anyway. you can easily put 300k highwway miles on the maxima. beater will break down and then you will have to pay for the stealhanic.
as for civic ....it is actually safer car than maxima. look at the crash test ratings. civic has excellents for every category. maxima has a poor grade on driver's leg compartment. even altima scored better...but its irrelevant right now...

Easy.
Switch to fully Synthetic oil to reduce engine wear.
Get a Cold Air Intake. Maybe a Berk if you are not worried about 'smog' tests in your state.
Get a catback or at least some sort of high flow exhaust.
That combo should be good for driving all those miles and getting the best mileage possible out of your car.
My 2K is a gem to drive. Comfy, cozy, stylish. Why buy another car you need to insure, etc. Heck, on the freeway I got 25.4 MPG. My old old 4 banger was getting 28.5 MPG on extreme freeway drives. Enjoy your car.

If your worried about losing money on depreciation, think about how much you'll loose buying a beater, repairing it, and keeping it insured. Not to mention you'll hate driving it. I bought my Max 16 months ago, and have put 64,000 miles on it since then. If you have to spend that much time behind the wheel, you might as well enjoy it!

EXACTLY!!! I bought my car for $10,800 when it had 71k miles. Now it has 118k+ and it's worth $9,555 so I guess after you pass 60k you are ****ed and then it just hangs around $9-11k

just change the oil every 3k and that engine should last at least 200k.... drive that car everyday. doesn't make sense to maintain 2 cars for what you can do for one car, with double annual inspection, double maintenance (have to change oil every 3 mon anyway), double the insurance, double the parking spot. double the depreciation..... all that for half the enjoyment. Now that is really stupidity.
