People with roof racks

I have a question. I was thinking about getting bug/stone deflector to protect the bike when I carry them. Is the deflector effective? If so, which one shoud I get? If you guys have any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks!

what do you mean a bug/stone deflector?...you mean the canvas piece that wraps around the front of the bike?.....If that's what you mean, I don't use one...I'm not real worried about rocks/bugs/dirt hitting the bike....it gets plenty of abuse already when I'm riding it...

But if you're talking about the fairing (in pic below)....it is not a bug/stone deflector, it is to reduce wind noise through the rack....

pls. clarify!

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant the kind that you put on your hood. Like this one:

What is the canvas piece you're talking about? Where can you get one? I'm a little worried about stone chips and such. And I would hate to clean bugs off of bikes.

Thanks!!

No my bike will sit on top of my roof. It's kinda dumb to put the roof rack on the hood, don't you think?

If you know what bug deflectors do you will know what I mean. I also asked if a bug deflector is effective on protecting the bike from bugs and small stones.

my bad for joking with you. but if you are referring to the bug deflector that goes on the hood, my observation would be that just based on the distance from the hood bug deflector to the bikes on your roof; it would have absolutely no protection for the bikes. the only protection i've see used are what "irish44j" mentioned about the canvas covers.

The least of your worries should be scratching the front of your bike when it's on top.... my old max:

I doubt the front deflector has any effect on the bikes on top of it, if you are worried get the sleeve thingies Irish was talking about that go over the front of your bike

Front Bug Deflector: saves bottom hood from bugs and crap

Fairing (Roof rack "deflector"): prevents wind noise and better air circulation for better fuel econ

Noi problem Shinnjee. I had to jab back you for your little joke

I was under the impression that bug deflector protects the hood and your windshield from small stones and bugs by deflecting wind/air upwards and blasting them out of the way, not just the front of the hood. That sounds more like a job for half nose bra. That's why I was asking the effectiveness.

If the stone chips and bug crap are the least of my concerns what would be the biggest concern, other than dumb things like forgetting the fact that you have the bike on your roof ?

some of the old foggies will remember this incident from a couple years ago but you spit those words right out....this is what happens when you add a roof rack + tierd driver with bike on roof + underground parking garage with bad clearence signs:

= bent roof (1600$ damage) broken bike attachment and screwed up bike derailers

Damn, that looks bad. I do remember seeing that on the board. I guess there are worse things than stone chips on the bike

But still, assuming that doesn't happen to be the stone chips and bug crap are my biggest concern. So the canvas covers are the way to go then. Where could I get some of these?

check out any local bike shop or online store. Usualyy they don't carry them in-stock (at least not for mountain bikes) but can special order them for you....it's basically a canvas piece with attachments that wraps around the front of the bike from the forks to the handlebars. I personally don't like them because they create more wind noise AND more wind resistance. And there's really nothing on your bike that can get broken easily by road pebbles or bugs hitting them ( unless you still have the reflectors on the bike I guess that could get broken)

And to answer your clarified question - I seriously doubt a hood bug deflector will do anything for your bike.....

Thanks. I found one that could work well.

http://www.performancebike.com/shop/...e.cfm?SKU=4634

From the looks of it, it shouldn't create more wind resistence and it might help a little with noise.

I really don't want bug puss and possible stone ships on my bike. I place to travel quite a bit with my bike and this might be worth while investing in.

oh so you're one of those guys who's gotta have a nice, shiny clean bike eh?

I just make sure my components are clean ....don't really care if the frame, handlebars, etc. are dirty.....

but back to the subject...that will work fine for you.....
