Need Help with Gauges
tap into the front before cat oxygen sensor, using a volt meter, check to see which WHITE wire has a voltage reading to the ECU thats less than a volt and varries back and forth. I would tap close to the 02 sensor for best reading- which in eighter way will not do ya any good as those cheap 45 dollar A/F gauges are just for show. If you want a good A/F gauge, get a UEGO AEM meter, anything less than a wideband 02 sensor is just crap. My Wideband I use on a few of the cars I tunned reads from 9:1 to 20:1 A/F, stock 02 sensors are good around stoich- which is around 13.5-15:1 at best !
Should i tap in to it before or after the connector the instructions say tap between the connector and the ECU and not to go before the conector. and by the way the car is a 2002 with hot shot headers. thanks for the help
Tap it after the connector- make sure the wires are intact or you will get a check engine light for a slow 02 sensor response or similar code. The closer to 02 sensor the better, the problem with this is that the gauge draws a little bit of the current the 02 sensor sends to the ECU and it will make the 02 sensor read a little off for the ECU. What are you going to be using this for ? tuning ? if so try www.daytonatwintec.com for a good wideband 02 sensor.
http://www.daytona-twintec.com/ this is actually the website, I'm sorry for the wrong link.
I have it hooked up and it reads fine for a wile then it will quit reading and if you let the car sit and cool off it will work again. the instructions said to not let the sensor wire get to hot but mine is close to my manifold i was wondering if that could be the problem i am can run the wire diffrent if you think that would make a diffrence. thanks again
do the little led lights oscilate back and forth on the gauge ? Did U use a 3M quick tap thiggie on the wire ? Or did U solder the wire on ? I used those 3M quick wire taps on my www.02simulator.com for my none existant cats... I was getting a bad connection at the wires due to the crappy 3M setup I was using. I just cut the wires and soldered them all up. No more check engine lights or anything... so just FYI bout the 3Ms and 02 sensors. Enjoy.
you should have 4 wires on the 02 sensor, I forget the colors, but red is power for the heater, black is ground, and 2 other colors are reference voltage for the sensor and other is the signal back to the ECU. I haven't messed with my 02 sensors for like over a month so I do not remember the exac colors. But I remember I figured out which one was signal using my volt meter- I left my service manual at home that day while I was at work, and AllData.com wasn't letting me in to look at diagrams for my electrical system of my 01. Heat shouldnt have anything to do with the way it reads- they advise ya to keep it away from heat as it might melt the shielding down- and if it touches something metal it will burn out the drivers for the 02 sensors in the ECU, or the whole ECU = alot of $$ just for a 50 dollar gauge.
i have 2 with 3 wires and 2 with 4 wires. the 3 wire are the ones in the headers befor the cat. the 4 wire are the ons that where extended when i had my headers put on and they are behind the cat. I have had this hooked up to every wire on all the o2s and the one it is on now is the only one that make any readings at all.
I figured out that if you let car cool off the guage will start working again. also if you just unplug the guage and leave the car on and wait a little while and plug the guage back up it will start to work again. do you think it might me a bad guage?
im taped into the rear before car o2 i see that you said to use the front one. will this make a huge diffrence? and is that any point at which your o2 sensors stop reading or are the always on? thanks for all the help so far oh and i joined all data and looked at the wiring for the 02 that helped alot i have it going to the right wire .
what I mean front 02 sensor is- there is a 02 sensor before the cat- and after the cat. On a 01 Cali spec and all 02-up Maximas there is no 02 sensors behind the main cat, there are 2 right on the front bank and 2 on the rear bank. I wanted you to tap into one of the 02 sensors BEFORE the cat- these monitor the A/F ratio. The ones after the cat just monitor catalitic efficiency. As for you gauge fluctuation, is it a AutoMeter ? They do sometimes go out and not work properly.
