Weird transmission problem

Weird transmission problem
Okay guys. My 2k2 auto has 53k miles and has not yet had its transmission fluid changed. I was trying to merge in thick traffic today and stepped on the gas, something I've done many times before with no trouble. All of a sudden my revs plummeted and the check-engine light illuminated. The car coasted down to a very slow speed and pressing the accelerator seemed to do nothing.
I pulled over to check it out. After restarting the car, I noticed the check-AT light come on for a few seconds. The check-engine light is still illuminated. However, the car seemed to run normally. I drove as I normally would with no problems. I've observed carefully for any strange noises or behaviors and have noticed nothing. Also, the tranny has never acted up before and doesn't seem to have any other symptoms.
So, does anyone think they know what the problem could be? I think it might not be a good idea to keep driving it but I have to for the time being. I'm open to all suggestions.

I had a somewhat similar experience where it felt like my engine shut itself down and my e-brake, battery, oil and SES light went on, but no check-AT light so I don't think mine is a tranny issue. Some folks have said it might be my MAF or just vapor lock (I was pretty low on fuel and coasting downhill). There was also something about a crank position sensor recall for the 02/03 year maximas.
