275 miles / 15.5 gallons = 17.74mpg what u guys think?
275 miles / 15.5 gallons = 17.74mpg what u guys think?
Just like the title says...I got 17.74mpg on my last fillup....lemme give u the scenario i was driving in.....
-90% city driving with very short trips (6 miles or less)
-Lots of stop and go at intersections
-WOT runs here and there (gotta love the 6spd =)
-A/c Blasting 75% of the time
-SO CAL weather at 90 degrees + everyday for the last week
-Bone stock 6spd except GAB (ghetto airbox)
-Mobil1 10w-30 synthetic, Nissan oil filter, Redline MT-90 and Toyota reds coolant all changed within the last 2k miles
-28k miles on odometer
So what do ya'll think? When i first got this car I was doing like 19.5mpg all city....then it got really hot during the summer and i've been blasting the AC and driving in 90+ weather so my MPG dropped to like 17.5....and I think i've been doing more WOT runs than when i first got the car...that prob contributes to the lower mpg....
Anyway at first I thought my mpg sucks because i read other threads and people gettin like 22-24mpg ALL CITY...and i am like wtf? how the hell do these people get such high mileage? so I pulled for codes and came up clean.....pretty weird....but I guess hot weather and all city w/short trips and WOT runs makes yer mpg suck....well whatever....any inputs?

2k3maximase - how is that bad? if you get 300miles and fill up with 17 gallons that equals 17.6mpg....same as mine....
mclee45 - from your statement, you get about 23mpg....under what conditions do you drive? do you drive all city? do u drive in 90+ weather? do u drive very short trips with WOT runs? tell me yer secret

Steven, I'm getting 16.7 mpg and I drive in the same exact conditions as you... I don't do any highway driving and I always hit the worst traffic. Everyone needs those WOT runs sometimes to pass the crawling Hondas... Additional factors are the unbearable humidity out here and the quality of gas. Try cleaning the throttle body, check the air filter, things like that can't hurt. But our 90+ weather definitely contributes to the horrible mpg.
Maximadmoiselle thanks for the response....i feel much more relieved to find out i am not the only one driving these conditions...at first i thought the org was bunch of old people driving all highway to work.....but as for me I drive to work/school and its only within 5 miles from my house.....
Anybody else get this kind of mileage? Oh btw i use 91 chevron (can't get 93 over here in cali)

LOL....never go by the MPG estimator on the dashboard....they are notorious for being off by more than 5mpg.....try running yer car till its empty....then fill up all the way....then calculate the amount of miles u travel and divided by the amount of gallons u put in to make it full.....and lemme know wuts up...
tripple digit speeds every day, redline runs quite often, change my front tires every 10K miles, I get 265 miles to 11 gallons of gas. I don't like filling the car all the way up cause it makes it heavy :P My cruising speed is 90MPH most of the time, and I do drive on the streets alot, AC is blasting 60% of the time. 100K miles, on orginal 02 sensors. 575 miles to a tank full (17gal ) on a 70MPH long distance trip, car runs like a champ. A/F ratio is perfect thanx to S-AFCII and WideBand 02 sensor tuning- which attributes to my good fuel economy, and power.
wow 575 miles!?!? that is alot...i dont think i ever saw that # before....my calculations show u got 33mpg with 575mi/17gallons....i think the previous highest MPG i ever saw was Hal's turbo 95....he said he got like 31mpg or something with a revised 5th gear or a revised final drive or something.....but 33mpg is amazing....
Took a trip from Chicago to Phoenix, 1st gas tank was 490 miles, and then 540 miles and on the final one 575, 70-80MPH on cruise control. I noticed the same thing with my 93 SE-R I had before, it would get better and better gas milege the more it was driven at steady highway speed. Engine will adjust A/F for best possible fuel economy. I don't have any special trans work in my car, other than a Fidanza flywheel for drive train mod. Basically every bolt on, tunned, makes my car very efficient and fun to drive. I got 36MPG on my Sentra and it was rated at like 28MPG on the highway, it was moded also, same exac trip- From Chicago, through St Louis, Oklahoma City, Amarillo Tx, New Mexico, Flagstaff AZ, and then shoot down the mountains to Phoenix. I got pretty much similar fuel economy both ways. I was quite pleased with my Maxima, I drove it non stop, alone, on Redbull with just stops for nature calls and some food every once in a while.
Our cars drink gas especially the 3.5's (350,G35 Alti guys complain also on those forums), the 3.0s are a little better but not to much. My 350 and 03 Max drink like they have run in a Marathon everyday, even when I dont gun them.
For your driving that seems "about" right. A little on the low side but I wouldn't say that it's out of the range of "normal".
On my 2000 I usually get around 18-22mpg. I always calculate the milage after I fillup.
With these Maxima's, the only way to get good milage it seems is to control your right foot.

i think it also depends on the gas. or maybe it's in my head. i have been getting bp-amoco, and was getting 270 for 15 g's. mostly city and a/c, some wot. switched to shell v-power. same driving conditions, and i am now getting 300 and some change.
would someone like to shed some light on that? mind you i switched to amoco due to pinging problems with shell. all this talk about the new v-power made me test it. last three tanks, no pinging and i am getting an extra 300 some miles

My 00 gets about 23 in the summer on premium (5 speed) combined city/highway (I get 27-28 on pure highway when driving nicely, so I know that my car is doing well), but I hardly ever do WOT, my trips are always longer than yours, and I have a lot of highway driving. I would say that your mileage doesn't necessarily seem that bad. The car is supposed to get 21 in the city, and you're doing short trips with a heavy foot. These cars are vampires when driven fast.
Thanks for the replies everyone...I am glad to know that there are quite a few maximas out there gettin between 16-20mpg all city.....makes me feel relieved that i am not the only one.....
i am sick of reading people gettin like 30-32mpg all highway in some threads....its like FAWK dude how do u get that ****? i mean even if i did all highway i know I can't get nowhere near 30....more like 26 or 27 at best.....i can just tell....and with the people gettin 30-32mpg all highway, they claim to get like 24mpg all city and that still shocks me.....i just don't see how a v6 (3.0 or 3.5 auto/manual) can get 24mpg in city driving.....even if u baby it, i still cant imagine it.....well ionno....stop and go is suppose to really kill mileage but these people still claim to get like 24mpg...i wonder how they do it?

steven88, my 03 GLE performs the same as yours. I typically get around 17 in the city (lots of short trips) and 27 hwy. The trick for getting higher mpg on the hwy is to lighten up on your lead foot because the 3.5L engine gets thirsty when pushed.
I am not surprised! I get between 15-17 mpg on city streets.
On the freeway, I'm getting about 20-24 mpg (I have a lead foot
so about 20-21 mpg what I usually get). I've read that when
the engine is broken in you should get better mileage. I agree that
the 3.5L engine can be quite a gas guzzler if you have a lead foot!
Also, I don't have that many miles on my Maxima (about 6500 miles).

When I first got my Max I thought the car had a problems with the milage I was getting, I found out it was my foot most of the time. I just took a recent trip to Toronto and I decided to give it a test. I got all the way to Buffalo from Boston (about 450+ miles) on 16 gallons = 28.5 mpg.. not bad.. the reason I did this test was that on city driving, I get close to about 14.5-15.2 mpg.. i have tested this car soo many times and same result.. I use Mobile1 Synethic, 61500 miles, K&N Panel, Auto, A/C on about 80%, 93 octane from mobile every fill up, I have a stock car!.. and from the forums Ive been reading, this mpg is normal
wow. here i thought getting 19.9 city was bad. i average that in city. if all highway, i get 24 and some change. i don't sit on the pedal on the highway, but i do between 70-80 and i get great mileage...
You have to remember that most of the 33 mpg guys are just reading the read out on the dash. On a recent trip back from Pa I got 33.3 mpg on the readout, doing the math showed 408 miles/14.135 gallons = 28.8mpg.

anyway u said u filled up with 17.1 gallons? dang man u let your fuel light run that low before you fill up? because my fuel light comes on at approximately 14.5 gallons left....i know because i tried running the car till the fuel light comes on and i immediately pull over to fill up and i only got 14.5 gallons in.....how come on the 2k2s the fuel lights come on so early? in my old 96 the fuel light didnt come on until approx 16.2-16.5 gallons....or is it just me that my 2k2 fuel light comes on real early?
