Stutter or Stall only after cold engine startup - need advice
Stutter or Stall only after cold engine startup - need advice
I'm looking for advice to help track down a problem I'm having with my 2k GLE. Here's the symptoms: If the car has been sitting for 5+ hours, the engine is likely to stutter and possibly even stall when I first put it into drive and apply some gas. It is possible that pressing the gas pedal harder stops the problem, but that may just be I tend to do that at the end of the misbehaviour. The two times it stalled I didn't apply any extra gas when it started to stutter. Today it stuttered more than usual, but didn't stall. This all lasts 30 seconds or less, quite often only a few seconds.
I described this to the local Nissan dealer and they didn't know what it could be and said they'd have to change lots of sensors to be sure it wasn't a sensor problem, with an astronomical cost to replace them all. (All of the O2 sensors, the MAF, the MAP, and something else too).
I have only had one code thrown in the entire time this problem has been going on. The problem has become more predicable lately (sit for 5 hrs and it always happens) and more pronounced. The code I got was about a month ago, and has not returned. I got a P0174 Lean Mix Bank 2.
Any suggestions on what it might be? The car runs just fine as soon as this problem passes -- no stalls, no stutters, no lack of power or acceleration.
Cheers,
Roy

Same here...
i have the same problem in my 2000 se except mine doesn't really stall, it has rough idle... the ignition coils are known to go bad and i'm in the process of fixing mine now.
My codes are 1320(bad coil) and 0302 (cyl 2 misfire)
it's bad under 2100 rpm which is why i mentioned this to you, when i give mine gas it's fine, its just straining to stay above 500 rpm.
and don't go to the dealer to get codes read, they lie sometimes, go to an autoparts store; call around and find out which one reads the obdII for free cause some do
good luck

I too am having the same low idle buck @ cold start.
Every morning and when I leave work it bucks for about 100 feet or so.
Than as soon as I get it over 2100 it clears out.
I have yet to through a code and two dealerships say there is no problem.
I dont think they will ever find anything buy doing a road test. And If it's not spelled out for them w/ a code I S.O.L
I had a hole in my CAT and did not through a code or SES . Asked them to check my exhaust and they said it's all OK. I went to pick up my car and asked them to "look at this hole is this OK"
And he said Oh you should prob leave the car here overnight. so we can road test it in the morning.
3 days later I have a new CAT but they broke the hanger off the B pipe and won't fix it now.

got the same problem....
Teflon, my car has the exact same problem as yours. It's also a 2000 but an SE. It's been doing it for a few months but wasn't a huge concern as it only lasts for a few seconds. Then a few weeks ago the SES light came on. I took the car to my mechanic, he scanned the code and it was the same one you got, Lean Mix in Bank 1 or 2, can't remember which one. Anyway after a lot of investigation he narrowed the problem down to the oxygen sensors so he replaces two of them and I expect the stuttering problem to be gone. Not so. The stuttering was still there although the SES light wasn't on anymore. Then this morning the SES light comes on again. The car is at the Nissan dealership now and I'm waiting for the dreaded call. I can only hope that the fix doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.
The upsetting thing in all this is that this car has been babied for the last four years. Oil changes every 7,000KM with Mobil 1 Synthetic, regular servicing, good quality gas. The car looks like its brand new despite showing 92,000KM on the clock. Anyway, it looks like our problems are not unique so hopefully Nissan can figure it out.

I had the same rough "idle when cold" problem on my 2K Max at 70K miles with code P0171 the only code present. P0171= B1 (left bank) Lean). The roughness and/or stalling dissapeared after the engine ran for a minute or two.
The solution was a new MAF.
The MAF is easy replace and you can get one from Dave B. or a very few other dealers for $88 to $100 (shipped). Most dealers will charge about $440 for the MAF.

In follow-up to my previous note, the dealership called and its my MAF sensor. They wanted $600CDN for the MAF and $170CDN to install. I laughed and I laughed. I just ordered the MAF from Jerry Rome for $88 USD shipped. If I'm feeling adventurous I might even try installing it myself. How can these dealerships get away with charging such out of whack prices for parts.....it's insane.
Anyway, once I replace the MAF I'll let you know if the stuttering problem gets fixed.

I have a 2K GLE with 62K miles on it. Only premium gas, only Mobil 1. I do get a little carried away when driving on the highway (that was why I bought the car in the first place!). I have with the same issue.
It started in the spring. The SES ligt came on with an O2 sensor code. I took it to the dealer who replaced a coil and suggested that if it kept stuttering and stalling, it was probably an O2 sensor.
The weather got warmer and the problem went away for the summer. Now that the morning is getting cooler again, the stutter is back. It lasts for about a minute then the car runs fine. The SES light just came back on. I am going to AutoZone this weekend to get the code read.
