After reading Kev's problem with his engine cutting out around 4k RPM, I thought I would check my car out to see if it did something similar. After several runs this weekend and this morning, I did notice a similar problem. However, this one seems related more to the transmission rather than the engine. Kev's problem sounds like it is a bad sensor or something that totally cuts out the engine. This hestitation that I experience only occurs when O/D is off and you are accelerating just past 3k rpms. Just as you hit 3100 or 3200 rpm, the rpms will dip back to 3000 and then start rising once again. The engine does not cut out or anything though. This does not happen if you have O/D enabled though...only when O/D is off. Can you guys with automatics try this out? I am wondering if this is only something I have, or is a problem across the board. Thanks guys....

What you are describing shouldn't happen because you're accelerating. I don't recall my car doing that. Do you actually feel the car hesitating?

It doesn't really hesitate physically....The rpms just drop when they reach 3200 or so. The car doesn't slow down or do anything violent either. You wouldn't even notce it if you weren't looking at the tach probably. I think this has to do with the tranny though. It only does it in 3rd gear with the O/D off.

Okay, I will check my car on this too, but I think I have an explanation for it.

Our torque converters can mechanically lock in both 3rd and 4th gears. I believe what you are seeing is actually that. If the torque converter is only "locked" via fluid, there is probably some slippage. When the solenoids are activated and the torque converter mechanically locks, there will be absolutely no slippage what-so-ever. I suspect it's locking at about 3100-3200 rpm and you are seeing the slippage in the converter go away.

That would make sense if the TC had lockup in 3rd gear also. I didn't think that it did though. Also, if you are pressing the gas hard enough, the TC should not even try to lockup. Anyhow, try and see if you get the same thing.....Thanks!
