Non-HLSD Conversion to HLSD finally done!!

So I posted a couple months ago that I was going to purchase the HLSD unit, from Dave Burnette, and convert my car from a Non-HLSD to an HLSD.

Well, Tony and I did it this Wed & Thurs... We could have gotten it done all on Wednesday, but a part we needed didn't arrive at the dealership...

So here's the pics... I'm not gonna do alot of narrative, so if you wanna know more, you can PM me or email Tony (his email is on my Cardomain site)

Enjoy!

PS - We'll be taking a pic of the dual-stripes we left on the street later and post them...

Tranny on the bench:

Case cracked, open diff removed:

HLSD installed:

Closeup of the splines inside the HLSD - You can see that there are splines for both axles...

Pic of the JWT lightened flywheel installed... we also installed my JWT Stage 2 clutch after this pic was taken...

I wonder if the AE LSD can be done this "easily" or even purchased separately.

Nope, bearing diameters are WAY different. I may have a lo-mile 2000 trans to try the Nismo LSD in soon- the Nismo catalog lists an LSD for all RSF5F50A applications BUT the Maxima. Hmmm-

I didn't realize JWT had produced a lightened flywheel or clutch for 5.5 gens. Are these the 350z ones or specific applications for the 5.5 Max's? What are the specs, weight, type of clutch material etc?

BTW nice job.

Altimas, old FWD Maximas, and our old friend the Stanza! I really thought it fit more than that!

Yup... I believe they are interchangable for the 2K2/2K3 and the 350Z... The only difference you need to be aware of is the placement of the dowels in the flywheel - which are different between the 2 cars.

I have pics of the OEM flywheel weighing in at 29-30lbs and the JWT flywheel at 15lbs... Big difference in weight. Also, due to the differences in materials and weight, the harmonics are totally different - noticed when starting the car. It almost sounds as if the starter is grinding, but we called JWT and they said that the sound is normal.

The clutch is JWT's Stage 2 clutch. It actually looks like a 300ZX TT clutch that has been re-manufactured by JWT - NISSAN is stamped all over the clutch. The Flywheel looks like a Fidanza flywheel that's been rebadged for JWT.

JWT sells the Stage 1/2 clutches and the flywheel as specific for the 2K2/2K3 Maximas.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the clutch is made of organic materials...

Here're the pics of the new dual stripes we left on the street... We weren't trying to do a big burnout, since the clutch is supposed to be broken in for 500 miles...

You can see that there's a break in the stripes... this is the 1 - 2 shift

I don't have a write up, sorry... My involvment, pretty much, was limited to fetching tools, holding things, etc...

Tony's the Nissan Master Tech and he did the overhaul... if you want to know more information though, you can feel free to email him - there's an email link on my cardomain page... look for where it says "click here"

It feels like it's quicker... even though there's probably only a marginal gain in power, due to the lightened flywheel.

With both wheels now providing power to the ground, the car seems to pull harder off the line. Also, torque steer is somewhat reduced.

The stage 2 clutch is very nice - no chatter at all. On my 2K, the stage 1 ACT clutch/fidanza flywheel setup had lots of chatter until I learned how to drive with them...

With this JWT clutch, there's no chatter, but once the clutch engages, IT ENGAGES!

The RPM's drop off quicker between shifts, but I shift pretty quickly by habit, so it's not a problem for me.

Of course this isn't a swap recommended for most people to attempt. The RS6F51 is a big PITA to dissasemble. But it is nice to see someone else finally doing this swap.

The RS5F50A is the old 5 speed used in the '95-'01 Maxima and you can't add a VLSD to one. The RS5F50V has a much larger outer bearing race toa ccomodate the Viscous unit. To convert this transmission you would also need the transmission casing to go along with it.

Here are some more pictures of the swap I did last February.

What are the prices on the clutch and flywheel combo?

I am hoping my clutch doesn't go out soon, I'm only at 34K but when it does, I don't think I would like a OEM replacement, perhaps something a bit beefier, but still easy to drive in traffic.

The stage 2 clutch and flywheel combo was about $950 shipped... If you get the stage 1 clutch, which is still stronger than your stock clutch, you save about $200...

The car does launch better and it seems to accerate harder... but I haven't driven it too hard yet... torque steer is somewhat reduced also...

I believe I paid $470/shipped for the HLSD from Dave Burnette.

The bearings, races, bore plug, anaerobic gasket goop, synthetic blend gear oil, etc., cost at most, another $75-100.

The Stage 2 clutch and lightened flywheel were about $950 shipped...

Looks fairly simple vs my 5spd rebuild I did just not too long ago. Tranny looks very similar to the Honda 6spd FWD units. Shift forks pull out with the main shaft and counter shaft ? Or do you have to pound out all kinds of roll pins n stuff to get the shifter rod out of the case ? It looks like a very simple tranny vs the old 5spd. I rebuild alot of Acura 6spd trannies a year- trans guy at Acura This is why I mention the Honda 6MT.

It's quite different from the older 5 speed. This one is full of PITA double roll pins that have to be removed in a specific order. The shift fork assemblies do have to be dissasembled idependently of the gear shafts. And the complexity of shift lock dowels, springs, bearings and set screws is far more aggravating to deal with. But as with all Nissan FWD trannies you'll need a good set of snap ring plyers, flathead screwdrivers and prybars to go along with the punches.

This one also has a constant mesh reverse with it's own baulk ring syncrhonizer.
