Does your Heated Steering Wheel...

Heat up nice and hot for about three minutes, and then seem to shut itself off? I say "seem to" as the indicator light is still on, but over the next fifteen minutes the wheel doesn't heat up again.

How does your's work?

And if your's performs differently than mine, do you have a suggested cause?

Thanks,
Jerry

no, mind seems to have a constant amount of heat going thru the unit, no cycles or anything like that.

maybe its not cold enuff? i know the sensor is around 55* or so for them to work.

Mine cycles. I believe this is normal. I vaguely recall this issue coming up in the past.

Yea, it usually depends on the temp outside. It cycles through on my car as well.

Yup same here... it cools down a little after the car is warmed up... not sure if its correlated, but it seems to be around then.... if ya turn it off and on again the heat comes back right away...

Ha...i've always had the same question....mine cycles on and off, sometimes I need to turn it off and back on again to get it hot and other times I just leave it alone. I don't think it has any bearing on outside temperature as I turned it on to show my girl the other night when it was about 70. "Here honey, warm those hands first".

Both my '99 and 2k2 work the same as you described. It comes on and gets really hot, stays for a few minutes, and then stops heating. As puppetmaster said, you can just turn the switch off and than on and the heat will come back.

So the 99's in the Provinces came with Steering wheel heaters, they did'nt offer that in the States until 02?

Yeah in '99, Nissan offered a 1999 ES model which was a scaled down SE without a rear spoiler, leather, sunroof, bose and power passenger seat. But it did include a heated leather wrapped steering wheel for the cold Canadian winters.

Wow! Thanks for you all writing.

But isn't it amazing how different they are. Now I wonder why???

I don't find if I cycle my power switch I get heat again. Hmm, makes me think there's a thermostat.

And whether or not they're impacted by the ambient temperature is an interesting question. Who would know? Is this a reasonable question to call Nissan directly on? I kind of doubt it, but I could wait until it's colder.

Thanks, and More Opinions very welcome....

i doubt it has anything to do with outside temp... i think it has to do with the fact that nissan doesnt want to get sued for someone claming tehsterring wheel was too hott to touch after they got into an accident or something

im assuming its restricted to apply constan temp

I tend to agree with you. I suspect it is supposed to stay a constant temperature. But a friends 04 cycles too he says. So I wonder where the thermostat is to try changing.

What does your's operate like?

Any ideas if there's a thermostat for the steering wheel heater? Ideas where and how accessible it might be?

Thx.

Any ideas? Need some help locating how it's controlled, if someone has a bit of knowledge of the electrical system.

Thx.

From what I have figured through trial and error on my 2k3se, it has to be a certain temp outside for the heater to work at all. It then heats up and cycles so as to not burn the crap out of your hands.

Thanks, sohalilb. I guess rather than chasing what may not be a problem now, I'll wait for it to get colder out, and then watch to see if the operation changes any. I needn't wait long, as it's near 40 in the mornings here lately. Soon it will be 0 or -10, so the opportune testing period will be here. :-)
