02 Maxima is going to have 250 hp in order to make it better than altima.....but I doubt it will go V8 like Q45....if they add the voice control system in Maxima....tat will be sweeet.

Have to agree, the 02 Max has to move up to 260+ hp and the 03 will be redesigned as a large sedan like the Avalon, Crown Vic atleast thats what i was told at the Philly Auto show last Feb. by the Nisan rep. I was going to buy an 01 Maxima at the end of this month but seeing the 02 Altma im waiting for it in Sept now. What do you think the new Altima tags at? My guess is 18k base-27k tops.

The strict minimum that the 2002 Max will need is 260 HP, but I am calling for 265-270.

The 2003/2004 Max redisign will get the 345 HP VQ45 (is it a VQ?)

Bert, imagine what the 03/04 Maxima is going to set you back if it does have the VQ45. $35-40K USD? I will settle on the 02 Altima 3.5. Thats enough hp for me plus i think it looks better then the Max.I wish i could keep the Maximas interior w/ the new Altima. The 02 Altima dash is terrible while the current Max has the best interior in its class IMO.

Not dissing on Altimas or anything.
But you guys are going looneys over a car that hasn't even been mass produced. Just wait and see the car in person before you start believing. Just because you saw it on a webiste doesn't make it 100% true. Rumors are rumors and facts are facts. SO until they hit the street, i'm not gonna get all hyped up

But it's supposed to have 6 wheels with independant suspension, nitrous, turbo, supercharger, come with factory 20"s and run the quarter mile in -5 seconds... we're talking time travel here man!!

The problem is that it is not really rumor anymore. We are talking about Nissan's press release regarding a car that goes on sale in 5 months. But I agree that we'll need to wait until we see it/drive it for the final verdict.

Nissan has never given the Maxima near the power of the Q45, so why would they now? I would be totally shocked if they offered anything in a V8 engine for the Maxima, EVER!

My thought exactly! Or MAX-ALT-IMA.org. Sheesh!

I think if given a choice, I'd still go with a 2002 Maxima over the 2002 Altima. It's the last chance to cherish our Maxima as a mid-size sports sedan before it becomes a full-size sports land yacht in '03!

I don't know if i am alone in this thaught but i think nissan is going in the wrong direction. why get rid of the maxima as it is now? so many people like it because of its size and power. they should have left all of the classes alone and just introduced a new car to compete with the bigger cars. It makes me mad that i own a maxima. i know that i have alot of power now but when the new altimas come out they will be able to blow the doors off the maximas. That sucks...
sorry had to vent about this subject.
Peace...

With hids, more power and RWD they've got the current max beat down. I can't wait to see what they're doing to the max. Although I couldn't tell if a manual was offered at all.

Progress is a good thing!

The changes Nissan has made to the '02 Altima really raises the bar for Honda and Toyota who will be forced to make significant improvements to the Accord and Camry. Cars which I think are rather bland and boring.

Improvements to the Maxima should focus on allowing it to compete better with the likes of Lexus (IS300), BMW (325), Mercedes (C class) or Volvo S40. I agree with bad2rock and don't think making the Max a full-size car is the way to go. Let the Infiniti brand worry about competing with the Toyota Avalons of the world.

which will be faster? 3.5 max or altima?

i don't think that the Maxima will get the 275hp that the i35 is getting, but probably more like 260-265.

so which would be faster with a 5spd?

It is going to stay FWD drive and there was a link that someone posted that was link to Nissan news. There is stated that a 5sp was availble. I think the 5sp did 0-60 in 6.3 and the AUTO did it in 7.2. Gotta to test drive one when it comes out.

Well it may be half a second or so faster to 60, but I like the styling of my '00 Maxima gajillions of times better.

I'm glad I got mine before they go and make it into a behemoth.

I've already decided on a black 5 speed too. I'm not sure about the leather though. We'll see. I wonder how fast the 2.5 5 speed is. They say the auto is 8.3.
